Job Title: Diagnostic Medical Sonographer Profession: US Tech Specialty: Diagnostic Imaging Duration: 13 weeks Shift: Day Hours per Shift: 10 Experience: Minimum of 2 years Ultrasound experience License: OBMI and ARDMS registered US Sonographer Certifications: Current BLS certification Must-Have: Registered Vascular Specialist (RVS) preferred Description: Provide health care services by applying sonic energy to assist in diagnosis or treatment. Perform ultrasonic imaging and related procedures in areas such as OB/GYN, abdomen, breast, vascular, and small parts. Demonstrate anatomy for interpretation and/or intervention by request of a licensed practitioner. Exercise professional judgment in performing services and maintain a demeanor that complements medical ethics. Apply appropriate patient care and recognize patient conditions essential for successful procedure completion. An Advanced User is an individual who works as part of the Diagnostic Imaging team and possesses in-depth knowledge of all clinical ultrasound applications, workflow, and principles for the modality. Serve as an in-house training resource for peers, vendors, and applications personnel. Perform diagnostic sonography procedures and corroborate patient's clinical history with the procedure, ensuring information is documented and available for use by a licensed practitioner. Prepare patients for procedures and provide instructions to obtain desired results, gain cooperation, and minimize anxiety. Select and operate ultrasound equipment and associated devices to achieve desired results. Position patients and equipment to best demonstrate the anatomic area of interest while respecting patient comfort. Immobilize patients as required for appropriate examination. Determine ultrasonic frequencies and appropriate transducers for the anatomic area of interest. Evaluate images for technical quality and assure proper identification is recorded. Verify informed consent for and assist a licensed practitioner with interventional procedures. Practice aseptic techniques as necessary. Assume responsibility for providing for the physical and emotional needs of patients during procedures. Prepare, identify, and/or administer contrast media and/or medications as prescribed by a licensed practitioner, in accordance with state statutes and institutional policy. Initiate basic life support actions when necessary. Maintain knowledge of and observe universal precautions. Provide patient education and assist in maintaining records while respecting confidentiality and established policy. Assume responsibility for the assigned area and report equipment malfunctions. Provide input for equipment purchases and supply decisions. Offer practical instruction for students and/or other healthcare professionals. Participate in the department's quality assessment and improvement plan. Fulfill specific quality control duties in the assigned area if required. Understand and apply patient relations skills. Pursue the appropriate continuing education needed to maintain license or certification. Accomplish other assigned duties. Agency nurses may be floated to other departments where they are qualified to perform patient care before core staff are floated. Support the hospital's mission, vision, values, policies, and procedures. Participate in required education programs applicable to the position. Perform other related duties as assigned. Physical Requirements: Sufficient auditory ability to detect and respond to various sounds, including patient alarms and verbal communication. Clear and effective communication skills are essential for interacting with patients, families, and healthcare team members. Visual acuity is necessary for observing patient conditions, reading documentation, and distinguishing colors for clinical purposes. Tactile perception is important for assessing physical characteristics such as temperature, size, shape, or texture during patient care. Motor coordination is required for performing tasks necessary for using medical equipment and procedures. Occasional stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling may be required when assisting patients or accessing equipment. Walking and standing are typically continuous throughout the shift. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds independently and engage in frequent pushing, pulling, carrying, or repositioning of objects or patients weighing up to 25 pounds. Occasional lifting or transferring of individuals weighing over 100 pounds is expected, using appropriate lifting techniques, mechanical aids, or team assistance. May require sitting for long periods. Working Conditions: Primarily performed in an indoor healthcare environment, subject to variable indoor temperatures. Frequent exposure to infectious and contagious diseases, hazardous materials, and medical equipment is expected. All staff must follow appropriate safety protocols and utilize personal protective equipment as required. The healthcare environment can be fast-paced and unpredictable, requiring quick responses to changing circumstances, including high-pressure or emergency situations. Work settings involve multiple simultaneous demands and varying noise levels due to medical equipment, staff activity, and patient needs.
