Job Summary

The Breast Ultrasound Technologist is responsible for performing specialized technical procedures in Diagnostic Ultrasound utilizing high-frequency sound waves to assist physicians and healthcare providers in detecting anatomical abnormalities. The technologist performs breast ultrasound examinations, evaluates image quality, assists with breast procedures, and ensures accurate documentation while maintaining patient safety and quality standards.

Essential Job Functions

  • Performs breast ultrasound procedures according to departmental protocols and completes exams within allotted timeframes.
  • Performs portable ultrasound examinations as required.
  • Utilizes EPIC, Tele Tracking System, scheduling systems, PACS, and other computer systems for documentation and workflow management.
  • Performs diagnostic ultrasound examinations to identify breast abnormalities including masses, abscesses, cysts, stones, and other pathological findings.
  • Performs targeted breast ultrasound examinations and axillary ultrasound evaluations.
  • Assists physicians with ultrasound-guided breast biopsies, Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA), cyst aspirations, and related procedures.
  • Applies knowledge of breast anatomy, pathology, and BI-RADS ultrasound descriptors.
  • Optimizes images and ensures quality assurance standards are maintained.
  • Measures and documents breast lesions accurately.
  • Performs Doppler ultrasound applications and breast implant evaluations when required.
  • Prepares patients for procedures, explains exams, obtains patient history, and positions patients appropriately.
  • Evaluates technical quality of images and ensures proper image acquisition, processing, archiving, and documentation.
  • Maintains ultrasound records and patient documentation.
  • Calibrates, cleans, and performs routine maintenance checks on ultrasound equipment.
  • Maintains sterile technique and follows infection prevention protocols.
  • Stocks and maintains supplies and equipment.
  • Provides technical assistance and education to students, employees, and medical residents.
  • Greets patients and provides care following AIDET communication standards.
  • Maintains compliance with ACR, MQSA, HIPAA, and department quality standards.
  • Supports scheduled shifts, including weekends, and performs overtime as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years of breast ultrasound experience required.
  • Graduate of an approved Ultrasound Program.
  • Minimum 2 years training in Allied Health/College.
  • Current ARDMS Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) credential.
  • Breast (BR) Specialty Certification or equivalent breast ultrasound credential required.
  • Current BLS/CPR certification required.
  • Maintains continuing education (CEU) requirements.
