The Traveling Superintendent oversees multiple heavy civil and utilities construction projects from award through completion, ensuring they are delivered safely, on schedule, and within budget. This role combines project management with daily field leadership, coordinating all aspects of planning, logistics, procurement, and construction operations across various sites in New Jersey and the East Coast.

Responsibilities

  • Manage multiple heavy civil and utilities construction projects from award through completion, maintaining clear oversight of scope, schedule, and budget.
  • Develop, update, and maintain detailed project schedules, budgets, and forecasts to guide project execution and performance.
  • Monitor project performance to ensure work is completed safely, on schedule, within budget, and in accordance with quality standards.
  • Lead project planning efforts, including logistics, procurement, and resource allocation for labor, materials, and equipment.
  • Prepare, submit, and manage change orders, requests for information (RFIs), submittals, and all related project documentation.
  • Review project cost reports, billing, productivity metrics, and overall financial performance to identify trends and implement corrective actions.
  • Coordinate effectively with owners, engineers, inspectors, subcontractors, and field personnel to maintain strong communication and collaboration.
  • Provide daily on-site leadership and oversight of construction operations at active project sites.
  • Manage foremen, field engineers, subcontractors, and craft labor, ensuring clear direction and alignment with project goals.
  • Conduct daily coordination meetings and weekly scheduling meetings to align teams on priorities, progress, and upcoming work.
  • Ensure strict compliance with contract documents, specifications, and established quality standards throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Maintain project schedules using look-ahead planning and productivity tracking to anticipate needs and avoid delays.
  • Coordinate equipment, materials, trucking, and workforce requirements to support efficient and continuous field operations.
  • Identify and resolve field issues proactively before they impact production, schedule, or safety.
  • Champion a strong safety culture across all project sites by modeling and enforcing safe work practices.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, DOT, environmental, and company safety requirements on all projects.
  • Conduct regular safety meetings, site inspections, and incident investigations to address hazards and drive continuous improvement.
  • Enforce site-specific safety plans and quality control procedures to protect workers and maintain high-quality outcomes.
  • Maintain all required project records and regulatory documentation in an organized and accurate manner.

Essential Skills

  • Proven experience in heavy civil or utilities construction, with 2-10 years of relevant project or field leadership experience.
  • Strong background in construction management and commercial construction, including oversight of multiple concurrent projects.
  • Hands-on experience preparing and managing RFIs, submittals, and change orders for complex construction projects.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans, including advanced blueprint reading and shop drawings.
  • Demonstrated construction supervision experience, ideally with a general contractor, managing foremen, engineers, subcontractors, and craft labor.
  • Solid understanding of contract documents, specifications, and quality standards in heavy civil and utilities work.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations and best practices, including OSHA, DOT, and environmental compliance requirements.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to track schedules, productivity, costs, and documentation across multiple projects.
  • Effective communication and coordination skills to work with owners, engineers, inspectors, subcontractors, and field teams.
  • Bachelor's degree in construction or a closely related field.

  • Experience working on projects across multiple locations, particularly in New Jersey and the broader East Coast region.
  • Proficiency in look-ahead scheduling and productivity tracking tools to maintain and improve project timelines.
  • Ability to lead safety meetings, conduct site inspections, and perform incident investigations with a focus on continuous improvement.
  • Experience enforcing site-specific safety plans and quality control procedures.
  • Capability to manage project documentation thoroughly, including regulatory records and cost reports.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with a proactive approach to identifying and resolving field issues.

Work Environment

This role is primarily field-based and requires regular travel to various construction sites in New Jersey and across the East Coast. The Traveling Superintendent works on active heavy civil and utilities construction projects, spending most of the time on job sites coordinating field operations, meeting with project stakeholders, and overseeing crews and subcontractors. The environment involves outdoor work, exposure to typical construction site conditions, and close collaboration with field personnel, engineers, and inspectors. Work hours may vary based on project demands and scheduling needs, and the position requires flexibility to travel between sites as projects progress.

This is a Contract position based out of Vernon, NJ.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $45.00 - $60.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
