The Position: The Treatment Counselor (Overnight) is responsible for providing continuous overnight supervision, protection, and care of youth in a culturally sensitive, trauma-informed manner. The position maintains a safe and therapeutic residential environment through active supervision, required overnight monitoring and documentation, response to youth needs and safety concerns, and support of morning routines and transition to the school day, while serving as a positive role model.

Compensation and Benefits:

The pay range we’re offering is $22.00-$27.00 hourly depending (Based) on experience additional $1/HR differential for overnight position.

Qualifications:

  • Prior to employment, direct care team member shall meet at least one of the qualifications specified below and have relevant knowledge, skills, and abilities as identified under Required Competencies.
  • Have obtained a Bachelor of Arts or Sciences Degree; or
  • Have obtained a valid Child Development Teaching Permit; or
  • Have completed 12 semester units of Early Childhood Education, Adolescent Development, Foster and Kinship Care Education, or Psychology, and have completed at least 100 hours of on-the-job experience working with children; or
    • The 100 hours of on-the-job experience may be completed after starting employment at the facility. Pending completion of the 100 hours, staff shall not be counted in the staff-to-child ratio and shall not be left unsupervised with children.
  • Have a valid certificate as an Alcohol Counselor, Drug Counselor, or Alcohol and Drug Counselor, and have completed at least 100 hours of on-the-job experience working with children; or
    • The 100 hours of on-the-job experience may be completed after starting employment at the facility. Pending completion of the 100 hours, staff shall not be counted in the staff-to-child ratio and shall not be left unsupervised with children.
  • Have a valid vocational training certificate, credential, or documentation demonstrating that the individual is a trade journey person who instructs children in vocational skills and have at least 100 hours of experience working with children or adults as a mentor, athletic coach, teacher, vocational coach, tutor, counselor, caregiver within a residential setting, or other relevant experience as determined by the department; or
  • Previously been employed as a full-time staff member or served as a volunteer at a group home, short-term residential therapeutic program, or substance abuse treatment program for at least one year; or
  • Have relevant life experience in the child welfare, mental health, or juvenile justice systems as a consumer, mentor, or caregiver, or life experience with children who have experienced high levels of trauma, or other relevant experience as determined by the department.
  • Be at least twenty-one (21) years of age.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Constant supervision, protection, and care of children, individually and in groups at all times in a manner consistent with their personal rights, to ensure safety within a trauma-informed framework.
  • Work as a part of the treatment team to help children in the development of various skills, including social, vocational, educational, hygiene, and other skills.
  • Document the child's progress, identify potential needs for additional services, and report findings, along with any areas of concern and/or recommendations, to the treatment team.
  • In collaboration with the treatment team and Child and family team (CFT), develop and implement various activities for the children.
  • Administer appropriate behavioral interventions, provide crisis intervention, and implement physical restraints when necessary.
  • Dispense medications as directed when indicated.
  • Interact with the children’s family and other significant persons in a helpful, therapeutic, and non-judgmental manner.
  • Complete all required documentation in a legible, professional, and timely manner.
  • Successfully complete all required training and attend/participate in required meetings.
  • Assist in the orientation and training of new Treatment counselors.
  • Other related duties as assigned to ensure health and safety of the children.
  • Remain awake, alert, attentive, and actively engaged throughout the entirety of the overnight shift while maintaining continuous supervision and awareness of assigned youth and the cottage environment.
  • Conduct documented overnight cottage patrols and supervision checks in accordance with agency policy, including required patrols every fifteen (15) minutes
  • Utilize the Coredinate electronic patrol system to scan designated checkpoints and accurately document completion of required overnight supervision rounds.
  • During each overnight patrol, visually confirm the presence of each assigned youth and observe movement, breathing, or other indicators of well-being to verify that youth appear safe and free from distress.
  • Maintain appropriate supervision of bedroom and hallway areas, including positioning themselves to allow observation and rapid response while respecting each youth's privacy and dignity.
  • Promptly report and document missed patrols, supervision concerns, changes in a youth's condition, non-responsiveness, safety concerns, or other significant incidents in accordance with agency procedures.
  • Complete all required Night Awake Task List responsibilities and other assigned overnight duties without compromising the continuous supervision and safety of youth.
  • Participate in shift exchange with incoming team members and communicate youth-specific behavioral, medical, safety, supervision, and other pertinent information necessary to support continuity of care.
  • Support morning routines and transition to the school day, including assisting with wake-up procedures, breakfast preparation, and service as assigned, youth readiness for school, and safe and orderly school transitions.
  • Maintain assigned supervision of the cottage at all times and comply with established overnight staffing, supervision, documentation, and safety procedures.
