Position Summary
The Turnaround Planner / Coordinator coordinates field execution for refinery turnarounds, outages, catalyst changes, shutdowns, and other major maintenance events. Serving as the link between planning and execution, this role helps ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and in alignment with approved scope, schedules, and site standards.
The successful candidate will bring extensive field experience coordinating large turnaround events, work effectively outdoors in all Northern Wisconsin seasons, and build strong relationships across Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, contractors, and turnaround teams.
This role requires a collaborative, disciplined approach to execution, a commitment to mentoring developing personnel, and a focus on continuous improvement.
Key ResponsibilitiesTurnaround Execution & Field Coordination
Coordinate field execution during turnarounds, outages, catalyst changes, shutdowns, and other maintenance events.
Resolve field execution issues, remove barriers, and facilitate safe, efficient work progression without compromising site standards.
Coordinate with Operations, Maintenance, Inspection, Engineering, Supply Chain, and contractor supervision to execute approved scope.
Monitor progress, risks, schedule adherence, and productivity; escalate issues as needed.
Complete daily progress updates with the scheduler.
Work Package Review & Planning Support
Review turnaround work packages for scope completeness, constructability, safety, quality, and execution readiness.
Confirm packages include required drawings, specifications, procedures, isolation requirements, material information, and labor estimates.
Provide constructability input and validate scope through field walkdowns and stakeholder engagement.
Build work packages and job plans during periods of lower field activity, as required.
Capital Project Integration
Participate in Capital Project constructability reviews and provide maintenance and execution expertise.
Identify execution risks, access and logistics constraints, and scope optimization opportunities.
Align turnaround and project schedules, resources, execution strategies, and interface activities.
Collaboration & Leadership
Promote teamwork, mutual respect, accountability, and productive problem-solving across stakeholder groups.
Mentor planners, coordinators, contractors, and developing turnaround personnel.
Share field knowledge, lessons learned, and best practices to strengthen organizational capability.
Safety & Operational Excellence
Ensure work complies with site safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements.
Participate in risk assessments, field reviews, and readiness activities.
Support post-event reviews, lessons learned, and continuous improvement.
Required Qualifications- Minimum 10 years of refinery or petrochemical turnaround experience, including field coordination of large, complex maintenance or construction events.
- Strong knowledge of turnaround planning, execution, work management, and contractor coordination.
- Proven ability to work effectively with Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, Inspection, and contractor organizations.
- Strong communication, leadership, and organizational skills.
- Willing and able to work outdoors in Northern Wisconsin in all seasons and conduct extensive field walkdowns in active operating and construction environments.
- Ability to work extended hours, nights, and weekends during turnaround execution
- Must be able to work in an industrial refinery environment including climbing towers, extended period of walking, and accessing equipment. Ability to carry minimum of 50 lbs required.
- Must comply with all refinery safety policies and site access requirements
Preferred Qualifications- Experience building, reviewing, and auditing turnaround work packages and job plans.
- Working knowledge of SAP, IPS, and Primavera P6.
- PMP certification, a Construction Management degree, or equivalent project management experience is an asset.
- Reporting Relationship: Reports to the Turnaround Manager and works closely with Turnaround Planners, Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, Inspection, Capital Projects, and contractor organizations.
Location: on site in Superior, WI
Work schedule: 40 hours/week, but during execution (2028) OT will be expected (exact schedule to be confirmed)
1 year contract with likelihood of extension for the right candidate
