As a Peer Writing Tutor, you will serve as a collaborative mentor to students across all academic disciplines. Rather than acting as an editor, you will empower writers to improve their craft at every stage of the writing process-from initial brainstorming and outlining to final polishing. This role requires a balance of strong communication skills, empathy for diverse learner backgrounds, and a commitment to ongoing professional growth. The Writing Center serves a wide range of writers, so applicants from every major and students with diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

Basic Job Function

  • Facilitate one-on-one writing consultations, both in-person and online.
  • Participate in mandatory training and tutor certification programs.
  • Develop and lead workshops and presentations about writing.
  • Manage your appointment schedule and assist with drop-in tutoring sessions.
  • Work as a Writing Learning Assistant (embedded tutor) as needed.

This position offers three levels of certification, which reflect the depth of the training the tutor receives. Each level comes with a rate increase.

  • Level 1 focuses on training tutors in the basics of being a tutor.
  • Level 2 is contingent on maintaining Level 1 training certification, and focuses on metacognitive and psychosocial requirements for tutoring.
  • Level 3 is contingent on maintaining Level 1 and 2 training certifications, and focuses on a more holistic view of learning center management and student development theories

Tutors who complete Level 3 are eligible to advance to the Lead Tutor role, which carries increased pay and responsibilities. This role provides direct tutoring support to students while also assisting the Tutoring Coordinator with management of the center, staff mentorship, and the implementation of tutoring training.

Please note that the Lead Tutor position is contingent upon the tutoring center's needs and requires formal approval from the coordinator.

This is a pooled position. Applicants are selected from the pool as positions become available. After a period of time the pool will expire and applicants will be notified.
