    Job Summary:

    Perform ultrasound procedures on high-risk obstetrical patients for Perinatologist to read and following the policies, procedures, and protocols of the unit.

    Accountabilities:

      1. Plans, manages and performs all required studies including nuchal translucency, level 1 ultrasound (US), level 2 US, Doppler flow, endovaginal studies, studies on multiple gestations and assists with invasive procedures such as amniocentesis and Chorionic Villi sampling maintaining an awareness of the normal while reporting variations to the Perinatologist.
    • a. Safely orients to and utilizes hospital's ultrasound machines with an understanding of their functions to perform studies acquiring excellent images.
    • b. Organizes daily workload and assigns priorities for flow of patients.
    • c. Ensure exam is completed and patient is discharged in a timely manner.
    • d. Informs patient's nurse verbally and places note on the chart for any incident affecting patient care or management.
    • e. Provides patient history to Perinatologist and makes images available so that the Perinatologist may review the films with complete information.
    • f. Uses good judgment to reschedule patients when study cannot be completed, fetal lie interferes with ability to visualize everything the study requires or when further information or follow-up with the Perinatologist is needed.
    • g. Demonstrates ability to perform with clinical proficiency in crises and medical emergencies.
      1. Uses the hospital systems such as medi-tech and PACS and the schedule to safely contact patients, document appropriately, and maintain studies in the hospital system as per hospital policy.
    • a. Calls scheduled patients to remind them of their appointment and set expectations for the visit.
    • b. Orients to and safely use the PACS system.
    • c. Keeps current using hospital systems such as email, on-line policies, and minutes form unit meetings.
      1. Communicates and collaborates with patients, physicians and family members in order to achieve excellence in patient care.
    • a. Handles all interactions with courtesy and respect. Provides information to solve problems, explain procedures, provide post-op, and discharge instructions.
    • b. Verifies Physician orders appropriately and follows up with physician or nurse on all questions.
    • c. Introduces self to patients, makes explanations and instructs patients with an awareness of patient comfort and safety.
    • d. Utilizes effective interpersonal skills including interaction with staff through understanding, talking, listening and seeing.
      1. Promotes patient safety through adherence to protocols, policies and procedures, evidence-based guidelines, State regulations, and Joint Commission National Patient Safety Goals.
    • a. Maintains equipment in good working order, reports equipment failure, and initiates corrective action. Where appropriate, adheres to defined computer generated quality monitoring or procedures for validation of equipment functionality.
    • b. Maintains safety precautions necessary to provide excellent patient care including infection control, patient/bed positioning, side rails, skin care, work injury prevention, cleaning of ultrasound probes, and daily QA testing.
    • c. Analyzes data and responds to unusual/undesirable clinical status by consulting the appropriate healthcare team members and taking appropriate action in a timely manner.
      1. Maintains clinical competency according to unit-specific standards.
    • a. Demonstrates competency in maintaining specific technological skills required by job category and/or specialty area. See individual department competencies for unit specific requirements. Demonstrates recognition of equipment or technological adaptations dependent on age-specific patient needs (See Scope of Practice as delineated in departmental standards and/or related Policy and Procedure in the Policy and Procedure Manual).
    • b. Completion of annual mandatory requirements:
    • · B.L.S. certification
    • · RAHE
    • · Annual competency test
    • Performs duties in accordance with Penn Medicine and entity values, policies, and procedures
    • Other duties as assigned to support the unit, department, entity, and health system organization

    Qualifications:

    • Graduate of accredited program and 3 years of OB/GYN and/ or perinatal ultrasound.

    Licenses, Registrations, and Certifications:

    • BLS required
    • Registered/Registry eligible for RDMS. (acquire within one year of hire)
