ULTRASOUND TECHNOLOGIST - CONTINGENT - ROTATING SHIFT

Schedule: Three shifts per six week scheduling period or based on unit practice.

General Summary:

Under the direction of a Radiologist, specializes in the performance of diagnostic ultrasound procedures to aid in the evaluation of pathological entities as prescribed by a physician. Performs related functions according to department protocols. Utilizes independent judgment in determining appropriate imaging techniques, patient positioning, and safety practices.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Explains examination procedure to patients and prepares patient for the examination.
  • Obtains additional information about the patient's medical history as necessary.
  • Prepares procedure room and regularly replenishes stock such as linen and related supplies.
  • Prepares prescribed contrast media and solutions for administration to patients.
  • Reviews clinical data on requisition, analyzes anatomical structure of patient, sets up equipment and, following protocols, and performs the procedure.
  • Manually controls the equipment to obtain the proper diagnostic information for the area of the body being studied.
  • May assist Radiologist in performing diagnostic invasive procedures.
  • Prepares and sets up sterile equipment, physiological monitors, pressure injectors, and imaging equipment required for the procedure.
  • Ensures the adequate supplies such as needles, catheters, etc. are on hand and properly stored.
  • Completes all necessary work sheets, logs and other patient records.
  • Pre and post processes images as appropriate.
  • Performs all documentation in the medical record as necessary, as well as within the radiology information system to support all clinical and billing functions.
  • Demonstrates on a consistent basis Team member standards of excellence including: AIDET, open communication, responding in a timely manner, displaying a positive attitude, fostering innovation, respecting diversity, etc.
  • Performs Quality Assurance procedures as appropriate
  • PACS: resolves any/all image exceptions and ensures high quality image delivery into PACS; including viewing of images into PACS, and confirming image/series counts.
  • RIS: completes all study indexing; including study begin, study end, and the completion of the study in the Radiology Information System

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent is required.
  • Must be registered with the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS), or eligible candidate to sit for an ARDMS examination.
  • The ARDMS defines 'candidate' as an applicant who has met the prerequisites required to sit for an ARDMS examination. If eligible candidate, successful completion of SPI, Abdomen, and OB/GYN ARDMS examinations required within 12 months of date of hire.
  • Failure to obtain registry within the designated timeframe will result in termination of the Ultrasound Technologist position.
  • Must maintain required hours of continued medical education.
  • Healthcare Provider certification required (BCLS).
