Job Description

General Purpose of Job:

This position serves as a health care interpreter for non-English speaking patients, staff and family within the Sparrow Health System to ensure comprehension of information and cultural considerations during treatment. Serves as LEP(Limited English Proficiency) patient advocate to ensure hospital is providing best possible care and support to patients, family and staff. Provides support to Patient Experience Department in all activities as assigned by manager in support of our community in the greater Lansing area.

Essential Duties:

This job description is intended to cover the minimum essential duties assigned on a regular basis. Caregivers may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned by their leader. Leadership has the right to alter or modify the duties of the position.

• Provide patient centered care through interpretation
• Concurrently provides bilingual interpretation to LEP (Limited English Proficiency) patient needs between patient, family and caregivers/providers to ensure understanding of needs, issues and/or concerns
• Maintain professionalism in all situations and ensures standards of activities and ethics are met
• Maintain accurate and timely documentation of interpretation activities
• Maintain confidentiality during and regarding all interpretations
• Work closely with Language & Interpreter Services Specialist to coordinate and schedule appointments
• Provide sight and written translation of Sparrow documents for patients as needed
• Adhere to interpreter standards of practice and code of ethics
• Provide education to individuals and provider/staff on culturally specific values, beliefs, and practices that are relevant to the encounter
• Remain sensitive to the culture associated with the language of expertise
• Attend scheduled trainings or appointments
• Maintain appointment calendar
• Other duties as required/assigned per interpretation needs
• Coverage as needed for complaints or grievances

Job Requirements

General Requirements • Demonstrates knowledge and maintains and respects patient right to privacy by following the HIPAA Privacy and Security policies and procedures. • Adheres to ICARE values and standards of behavior (Innovation, Compassion, Accountability, Respect, Excellence). • Role model behaviors that value the diversity of our caregivers, patients and customers and supports creating an environment that is inclusive, welcoming and respectful. • Communicates with patients, families and customers using AIDET (Acknowledge, Introduce, Duration, Explanation, Thank). • Works in a safe manner and promptly reports any hazards identified in the work environment or related to assigned responsibilities. • Adheres to policies and procedures designed to avoid, prevent and reduce the spread of communicable diseases. Work Experience • Minimum (1) year interpretation experience • Previous exposure to simultaneous interpretation. Preferred. • Previous exposure to consecutive interpretation. Preferred. • Healthcare interpretation experience. Preferred. Education • High school diploma/GED required • Medical Interpreting Certification (ATA, CCHI, CMI or equivalent certification). • Bachelors Degree in related field. Preferred. Specialized Knowledge and Skills • Fluency in written and oral multiple languages • Excellent written and oral language skills • Knowledge of medical terminology • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality • Thoroughly understand subject matter to effectively convert source language to target language • Valid Driver's License and satisfactory driving record • Must pass criminal history background check • Must provide health records (proof of annual TB screening and updated immunization records) • Demonstrates ability to use a keyboard as may be required to perform the essential duties of the job.
