Job Description

General Purpose of Job:

Responsible for providing professional nursing services to patients in the Hematology/Medical Oncology Physician Clinics. The Registered Nurse assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates individualized patient care in collaboration with the physician and multidisciplinary care team. Responsibilities include symptom assessment and management, patient education, care coordination, and supporting patients throughout their oncology treatment. Provides care in accordance with established policies, procedures, regulatory requirements, and standards of oncology nursing practice.

Essential Duties:

This job description is intended to cover the minimum essential duties assigned on a regular basis. Team members may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned by their leader. Leadership has the right to alter or modify the duties of the position.

• Provide direct patient care within established protocols and under the direction of the physician.
• Assess patient needs, initiate appropriate nursing interventions, and assist with ongoing medical care.
• Provide education to patients and families regarding hematology/medical oncology diagnoses, treatments, procedures, laboratory and diagnostic testing, and symptom management.
• Maintain accurate and timely documentation of patient care and interactions, including telephone and electronic communications.
• Coordinate laboratory, diagnostic testing, referrals, and follow-up care to support timely treatment and continuity of care.
• Communicate relevant patient information, abnormal laboratory and diagnostic results, and changes in condition to the physician and appropriate members of the care team.
• Coordinate care with patients, families, physicians, pharmacists, and other healthcare providers to support comprehensive oncology care.
• Demonstrate understanding of oncology referral and authorization processes and assist with navigating requirements to facilitate timely access to care.
• Serve as a resource and preceptor for new Associates and students.
• Participate in staff meetings, education, quality improvement initiatives, committees, and special projects as appropriate.
• Collaborate with the Department Manager to identify workflow needs and support process improvement initiatives.
• Maintain professional standards and comply with applicable policies, procedures, regulatory requirements, and standards of practice.
• Protect patient privacy and confidentiality by adhering to HIPAA Privacy and Security policies and procedures.

• Communicate with patients, families, and customers using AIDET (Acknowledge, Introduce, Duration, Explanation, Thank).

• Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

Work Experience • Minimum of 2 years outpatient oncology experience, within the last 10 years required. • Outpatient Oncology physician clinic experience - preferred Education • Associate degree in Nursing, required. Bachelors in Nursing, preferred • Ongoing continuing education directly related to the field of oncology. • Current State of Michigan licensure as a registered nurse. • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 60 days of hire. • Chemotherapy / Immunotherapy Provider card within 60 days of hire. • Oncology Nursing Certification (OCN) preferred; if not OCN certified, completion of at least 6 oncology-specific continuing education hours annually is required. Specialized Knowledge and Skills • Demonstrates strong interpersonal and communication skills to effectively collaborate with patients, families, physicians, and members of the healthcare team. • Demonstrates ability to develop and implement individualized nursing care plans that address age-specific, physical, psychosocial, safety, and educational needs. • Demonstrates clinical judgment, initiative, and leadership skills to independently prioritize patient needs and respond appropriately to changing clinical situations. • Demonstrates strong assessment, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills necessary to provide safe, effective Hematology/Oncology nursing care. • Demonstrates clinical knowledge and analytical ability to assess patient needs and develop appropriate nursing interventions related to Hematology/Oncology care. • Requires sufficient visual and auditory acuity to assess patient condition, communicate effectively, and safely operate necessary equipment.
