The intent of the individual in this position is that he or she is seeking to become a sworn police officer. As such, he or she will attend the most recent upcoming Basic Law Enforcement training, which is a rigorous program that consists of 784 course hours and takes 20 weeks to complete. The Basic Law Enforcement training will take place at the Georgia Public Safety Training Center located in Forsyth, Georgia. The recruit will be sponsored by the City of Griffin Police Department (GPD) whereby GPD will pay you an hourly rate for training hours worked and will pay for your registration and training fees. After the recruit successfully completes the program, he or she receives the Peace Officer Standards & Training (POST) certification and will then advance to the law enforcement officer position with GPD. Until that time, the recruit is not a sworn police officer and does not have the authority to make arrest. He or she will, however, assist patrol officers in performing their duties and may be used as a resource in emergencies and special events. He or she will also receive in-house training to include a basic knowledge of the field of law enforcement including criminal law, traffic law, criminal investigation, crime prevention, traffic control and direction, accident investigation, juvenile delinquency, and other related fields.
Upon receiving the POST certification, the individual will provide for public safety by maintaining order, responding to emergencies, protecting people and property, enforcing motor vehicle and criminal laws, and promoting good community relations. |
