Underwriter

Location: 100% Remote
Schedule: Monday – Friday | 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM
Pay Rate: $58.29 - $59.29 per hour

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced Underwriter to perform fully manual underwriting and credit qualification for mortgage assumptions and related transactions. This role requires extensive knowledge of FHA, VA, Fannie Mae (FNMA), and Freddie Mac (FHLMC) guidelines, along with the ability to independently evaluate and approve loans without the assistance of automated underwriting systems.

The Underwriter will work closely with processors, management, and clients to review loan files, communicate underwriting decisions and conditions, coordinate condition resolution, and ensure files are reviewed and approved within established service-level timelines.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Perform manual underwriting and credit qualification for mortgage assumptions and related transactions.
  • Review loan files for compliance with FHA, VA, FNMA, and FHLMC guidelines and investor requirements.
  • Analyze borrower credit, income, assets, liabilities, and supporting documentation to determine eligibility.
  • Issue underwriting decisions and communicate conditions clearly and effectively to processors and borrowers.
  • Review submitted conditions, determine acceptability, and provide timely updates on file status.
  • Communicate directly with clients when clarification or additional documentation is needed.
  • Coordinate with processors and management to resolve outstanding conditions and facilitate loan approvals.
  • Order and review title reports as part of the underwriting process.
  • Ensure all underwriting reviews are completed accurately and within required turnaround times.
  • Support files through final approval and clear-to-close status.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum 5 years of mortgage underwriting experience required.
  • Previous mortgage processing experience preferred.
  • Extensive experience with manual underwriting.
  • Strong knowledge of FHA, VA, FNMA, and FHLMC guidelines.
  • Experience reviewing mortgage assumption transactions preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational, prioritization, and time-management abilities.
  • Ability to manage a high-volume pipeline while maintaining accuracy and compliance.
