As part of the Homebuyer Programs team,Ā you'llĀ directly support first-time homebuyers on their path to homeownership. This highly client-facing role combines underwritingĀ expertiseĀ with relationship-building, allowing you to work closely with borrowers throughout the loan process while ensuring responsible lending practices, compliance, and an exceptional customer experience.Ā
About this role:Ā
The Underwriter reports to the Manager of the Homebuyer Programs and plays a key role in evaluating loan applications for down paymentĀ assistanceĀ and other homebuyer programs. The Underwriter ensures compliance with program guidelines, regulatory standards, and internal policies while delivering excellent service to borrowers and partners.Ā
In addition, the Underwriter takes ownership of files from application through approval, resolves standard to complex scenarios, and supportsĀ timely,Ā accurateĀ loan decisions under the supervision and guidance of the Manager of Homebuyer Programs. The Underwriter also contributes to process improvements and collaborates across departments to support successful outcomes for first-time homebuyers.Ā

Program Knowledge & ComplianceĀ
- Demonstrate knowledge of all homebuyerĀ assistanceĀ programs, eligibility requirements, and underwriting standardsĀ Ā
- Apply program guidelines accurately and consistently in underwriting decisionsĀ Ā
- Maintain compliance with internal policies, program regulations, and lending laws, including TILA, RESPA, ECOA, FCRA, and HMDAĀ Ā
- Stay informed of updates to underwriting practices, program requirements, and regulatory guidelinesĀ Ā
- AssistĀ withĀ maintainingĀ complete and organized documentation for compliance and audit purposesĀ Ā
Ā
Underwriting & Loan ProcessingĀ
- Review and analyze loan applications toĀ determineĀ program eligibility and assess loan riskĀ Ā
- Verify and evaluate income, asset, credit, and collateral documentationĀ Ā
- Underwrite loansĀ in accordance withĀ program and regulatory guidelines; issue decisions with clear rationaleĀ Ā
- Review and clear loan conditions to ensure complete andĀ accurateĀ filesĀ Ā
- Prepare files for final review and approval/denial by the Manager of Homebuyer ProgramsĀ Ā
- Escalate complex scenarios or policy questions to management as appropriateĀ Ā
- Maintain accountability for assigned files from application through approval, meetingĀ deadlinesĀ and service standardsĀ Ā
- EnsureĀ accurateĀ data entry and documentation using systems such as Salesforce, Box.com, and Excel-based loan worksheetsĀ Ā
- Meet department productivity and quality expectationsĀ

Customer Service & Stakeholder CommunicationĀ
- Provide responsive, professional support to borrowers, internal staff, and external partnersĀ Ā
- Collaborate with processors, program specialists,Ā lendingĀ and real estate professionals to complete documentationĀ Ā
- Communicate underwriting decisions and status updates clearly to team members and professionally to external stakeholdersĀ Ā
- Promote transparency and alignment throughĀ timelyĀ and effective communicationĀ Ā

Team Collaboration, Training & Continuous ImprovementĀ
- Participate in quality control activities and peer reviews to support consistent underwriting standardsĀ Ā
- Provide feedback to support process improvements and efficient program operationsĀ Ā
- Occasionally support outreach and educational activities related to homeownership programsĀ Ā
- Manage workload effectively to meet established timelinesĀ Ā
Ā
Additional Responsibilities (as needed)Ā
- Conduct borrower counseling sessions covering documents, disclosures, and closing proceduresĀ Ā
- Support the funding process by clearing conditions and preparing fund release documentationĀ Ā
- Conduct post-closing reviews for compliance with program standardsĀ Ā
- Prepare and organize closed loan files for audit or transfer to Asset ManagementĀ Ā
Ā
ExperienceĀ youĀ willĀ bring:Ā
- Minimum 3-5 years of residential mortgage underwriting experience required; affordable housing experience strongly preferredĀ Ā
- Knowledge of homebuyerĀ assistanceĀ programs, FHA/VA/Conventional underwriting, and affordable housing best practicesĀ Ā
- Strong analytical skills in evaluating income, assets, credit, and collateralĀ Ā
- Ability to manually underwrite mortgage loan applicationsĀ requiredĀ Ā
- Strong written and verbal communication with attention to detail and time-management skillsĀ Ā
- Familiarity with applicable compliance regulations, including TILA, RESPA, ECOA, HMDA, FCRA, etc.Ā Ā
- Familiarity with FNMA, FHLC, FHA, and VA guidelines preferredĀ Ā
- Proficient in Microsoft Office; experience with Salesforce and file-sharing tools (e.g., Box.com) preferredĀ Ā
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and adapt to changing prioritiesĀ Ā
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work across diverse communitiesĀ Ā
- Commitment to outstanding customer service and first-time homebuyer supportĀ Ā
- NMLS license preferredĀ Ā
- BilingualĀ proficiencyĀ in a language reflecting the communities we serve is a plusĀ Ā

Compensation & Benefits:Ā
The hourly salary range for this position isĀ $42.78Ā - $50.00Ā per hour.Ā Ā
