    POSITION DESCRIPTION

    I. TITLE OF POSITION: Unit Clerk / Clinical Assistant

    II. NATURE OF POSITION: This is a safety sensitive position and a member of the interdisciplinary medical team of the health center. The Unit Clerk / Clinical Assistant provides clerical, telephone, patient-flow, and clinical support to the unit. The position screens and refers phone calls, communicates and interacts with patients, assists clinical staff and providers with the provision of care, and serves as a liaison between front desk staff, nurses, providers, patients, and other GSP Health facilities. The position assumes responsibility for telephone and document management while supporting safe, efficient, and compassionate patient care.

    III. QUALIFICATIONS:

    A. High school graduate required.

    B. On-the-job training provided; previous medical or healthcare experience preferred.

    C. Basic typing and computer skills and prior telephone experience.

    D. Ability to communicate clearly and professionally.

    E. Ability to work on more than one task at a time and flow from one task to another smoothly.

    F. Ability to work through frequent interruptions and adapt to change.

    IV. SALARY CLASSIFICATION: Non-Exempt

    V. RESPONSIBLE TO: Manager of Clinical Services

    VI. RESPONSIBILITIES:

    A. Maintains a professional demeanor and works in harmony with others, exhibiting a positive attitude and commitment to the mission of GSP Health and it's Behavior Standards..

    B. Exhibits caring qualities consistent with the values of the community health center and demonstrates awareness of cultural factors and competence in reducing barriers to health care services.

    C. Maintains patient confidentiality and follows all applicable GSP Health policies and procedures.

    D. Answers, screens, assigns, and appropriately routes incoming telephone calls and voicemails at the nurse's station.

    E. Correctly enters telephone encounters and documents patient communications in accordance with GSP Health procedures.

    F. Returns patient calls as appropriately directed and addresses patient complaints according to the Patient Complaint Resolution process.

    G. Acts as a liaison between patients and staff to maintain smooth patient flow and communicates relevant information between front desk staff, nurses, providers, and other members of the care team.

    H. Follows infection control policies and procedures, including identifying and appropriately isolating patients with symptoms or conditions requiring precautions.

    I. Provides clerical and staff support to the unit, including managing incoming and outgoing documents, attaching documents, assigning documents appropriately, and faxing from the fax inbox and scan folder.

    J. Assists providers and staff with requesting and obtaining patient records.

    K. May work remotely at the discretion of the supervisor and in alignment with GSP Health policies

    VII. Other duties as assigned.

    A.

    When working as a CA for coverage assistance:

    A. Performs patient visit preparation and participates in care team huddles.

    B. Prepares patients for providers by rooming patients, creating orders, performing tasks designated by the provider, updating medication lists, and entering new medications as directed.

    C. Obtains routine temperature, pulse, respirations, height, weight, and blood pressure readings at first encounter and performs visual acuity screening using the Snellen method as applicable

    D. Perrforms appropriate documentation to support the provider and patient visit.

    E. Assists with clinic procedures, nurse visits, and other clinical visits as directed by the appropriate supervisor or clinical staff.

    F. Assists providers during clinical visits, including providing concise patient reports between patients as appropriate.

    G. Checks out patients and schedules follow-up visits as directed.

    H. Maintains a current CPR card and participates in GSP Health education and training, including required online training courses and agency-sponsored safety, evacuation, OSHA, and other training.

    I. Required to work at each satellite site as needed.

    J. Straightens and maintains the nurse's station and work areas throughout the day.
