Position Summary:

Coordinates the clerical activities of the Emergency Department. Maintains patient privacy, dignity, confidentiality, and respects patients' rights. Functions as the focal communication source in the nursing station.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  1. Transcribes information onto patient charts, into log books and notes orders

  2. Handles telephone calls (inside lines, outside lines, EMS calls and patient call system)

  3. Prepares patient charges using physician notes, nursing notes and treatment documentation

  4. Enters charges onto SMS computer terminal

  5. Assembles charts, maintains department filing and orders supplies as needed

  6. Enters patient charges

  7. Directs visitors, staff, physicians and outside agency representatives to patient area

  8. Performs typing duties as assigned

  9. Schedules and prepares charges for outpatient procedures

  10. Coordinates calls to special agencies as needed (e.g., police, animal control, etc.)

  11. Orders patient nourishments as needed

  12. Assists in data collection for monthly reports/assists with employee timekeeping

  13. Enters test results into the patient chart during down time

  14. Completes transfer log and admission log

  15. Runs errands when directed

  16. Performs other department related duties as assigned

Qualifications:

Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Knowledge of keyboard/computer and typing experience
  • Data entry experience
  • Medical terminology knowledge
  • BLS certification within 3 months of hire

Preferred:

  • Previous experience or training as Unit Clerk
