We are looking for a self-driven compassionate Unit Clerk to join our Med/Surg department. We offer a competitive salary and benefit package.


Shift:

  • Full time 80 hours every 2 weeks
  • 7a - 3:30p,  Monday-Friday
 

Principle Accountabilities and Essential Duties of the Job

  • Transcribes and documents physicians' orders promptly, accurately and completely.
  • Transcribes all STAT and NOW orders first, then reviews and prioritizes all others.
  • Knowledgeable of medical terminology, interprets handwriting accurately and seeks clarification when uncertain.
  • Utilizes accurate spelling, good penmanship and neatness.
  • Maintains patient's medical record by assembling chart in correct order and
  • places patient identification label on all forms.
  • Lists patient allergies on chart, kardex, MAR, computer as per department standard.
  • Enters daily laboratory tests in the computer; maintains current list of daily timed draw laboratory tests.
  • Knows procedure for calling STAT laboratory tests, x-rays, EKG, Code Blue, etc.
  • Notifies physicians of consults and schedules post-discharge tests and appointments, as requested.
  • Coordinates and schedules time with other departments for special diagnostic tests as ordered.
  • Provides nursing staff with special forms as requested.
  • Transcribes physicians' orders promptly with accuracy and completeness according to priority.
  • Replenishes physician order sheets in patient records.
  • Assists RN with checking pre-operative records for history and physical, consents, lab and radiology reports, EKG, etc.
  • Communicates patient information to ensure continuity of patient care.
  • Maintains awareness of department activities such as nurses' assignments, who is on break, patients to be transported, who has been paged by whom, etc.
  • Communicates with admissions regarding patient admission status; notifies charge nurse of new admissions; follows instructions in room assignments as directed by Clinical Care Coordinator.
  • Notifies Patient Care Coordinator (PCC)/RN of discharge orders and STAT and NOW orders.
  • Takes and communicates messages.
  • Communicates patient and department needs to appropriate departments.
  • Keeps Clinical Care Coordinator (CCC) and/or Nurse Manager informed of potential problem situations.
  • Reports to oncoming unit secretary prior to leaving work area.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the computer system by accurate order entry.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the phone system by using speed system, conference call, placing customer on hold and transferring calls.
  • Schedules patient procedures with appropriate department.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of patient call system and communicates patient needs with nursing staff.

  • Demonstrates flexibility in performing other duties as per department standard.
  • Verifies patient admission, transfer and discharge on computer.
  • Assists with patient transfers by ensuring chart, kardex, patient identification
  • labels and medications go with patient.
  • Obtains release of information forms for other institutions on patients who have documents faxed to and from Fitzgibbon Hospital as directed.
  • Orders supplies from Central Supply and Materials Management to maintain adequate inventory.
  • Transports specimens to laboratory when requested.
  • Maintains department log books per department standard.
  • Files lab and radiology reports and previous day's MARs in patient record.
  • Maintains current list of unit admissions and discharges.
  • Responsible for updating self on information related to patient care, department and/or system functions and processes.
  • Participates on unit council.
  • Participates on QIT as requested.
  • Attends unit staff meetings.
  • Complies with Administrative Structure Standards Element XVI, G.1.b., regarding attendance, absenteeism, quality and quantity of work.
