Job Description

Group Exercise Instructor

The MUSC Wellness Center is seeking a qualified Group Exercise Instructor to lead members and guests through high-quality, results-driven group fitness sessions for adults ages 18 and older. Our instructors are warm, knowledgeable, and motivating professionals who create a safe, inclusive, and engaging group training environment across a variety of class formats.

Classes may range from moderate- to high-intensity formats and may utilize equipment such as barbells, dumbbells, kettlebells, cycles, mats, or bodyweight training. Through guided instruction, participants work to build strength, endurance, stability, mobility, and overall fitness. Classes are designed to be accessible and adaptable, with modifications provided so individuals can progress safely at their own pace.

Key Responsibilities

(30%) Lead Group Exercise Classes
Deliver well-organized, energetic, and effective group fitness classes according to the assigned schedule, ensuring sessions are engaging, inclusive, and aligned with Wellness Center standards.

(30%) Develop and Teach Safe, Effective Class Formats
Create or deliver structured workouts appropriate to the assigned format(s), accommodating a wide range of fitness levels, ages (18–80), and physical abilities.

(20%) Assess Participant Needs and Provide Coaching
Observe participants and provide clear cueing, form correction, modifications, and progressions to ensure safety, effectiveness, and positive participant outcomes.

(10%) Communicate with Supervisor
Meet with the supervisor as needed to provide updates, discuss program recommendations, and address concerns or operational needs.

(10%) Teach Off-Site Classes as Needed
Occasionally lead group exercise classes at off-site locations in the surrounding Charleston area.

Requirements

· Must hold one of the following:
– A current, nationally recognized Personal Training certification, or
– A Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, or a closely related field, or
– A relevant nationally recognized fitness or group exercise certification

· Prior experience in Group Fitness, Personal Training, or Corporate Health & Wellness, with demonstrated ability to coach group classes across various formats.

· Strong professional communication skills, including confident coaching cues, appropriate vocabulary, and a positive class presence.

· Knowledge of exercise principles, functional movement, and safe exercise modification for diverse populations.

· A genuine passion for helping participants improve strength, movement quality, and overall fitness while fostering a welcoming and supportive class environment.
