THE ROLE

The Universal Banker is the first person most clients see when they walk into a Carver branch. That first impression matters. Every transaction is a conversation, every conversation is a relationship, and every relationship is an opportunity to show a client what it means to be served by a bank that was built for them.

The Universal Banker at Carver is not a transaction window. This role carries real expectations: deliver flawless transactions, provide informed and friendly client service, introduce Carver's products and services with confidence, and make qualified referrals to Personal Bankers when clients have needs that go deeper than the counter. RESPONSIBILITIES

Client Service and Transactional Excellence

• Process all client transactions accurately and efficiently, including deposits, withdrawals, check cashing, payments, money orders, cashier's checks, wire transfer intake, and cash advances, maintaining a balanced cash drawer at the close of every shift
• Welcome every client who enters the branch with genuine warmth, make them feel seen, and give your full attention to every interaction regardless of transaction size or how busy the branch floor is
• Answer client questions about account balances, transaction history, holds, and basic account features with confidence, escalating to the Branch Leaderhsip or Relationship Banker when the situation requires a more advanced conversation
• Resolve minor service concerns at the point of contact, exercising good judgment on when to handle and when to escalate, and always following up to ensure the client left satisfied
• Maintain awareness of wait times and lobby flow, communicating proactively with clients who are waiting and keeping the client experience organized and professional at all times

Referrals and Business Growth Contribution

• Identify client needs during every transaction interaction and make confident, informed referrals to Personal Banker for account openings, consumer loans, CD inquiries, digital banking enrollment, and any need that goes beyond the immediate transaction
• Introduce Carver's products and services naturally in the course of every client conversation, highlighting benefits without pressure and creating curiosity that leads to a deeper banking relationship
• Meet individually assigned referral goals as a core part of the role, understanding that every referral made well is a client relationship deepened and a direct contribution to the branch's growth
• Promote Carver's digital banking tools by educating clients on mobile banking, online account access, and self-service features, offering to help clients get set up before they leave the branch
• Participate in branch sales huddles, contribute your client observations and referral activity, and hold yourself accountable to the goals you commit to each day

Operational Accuracy and Compliance

• Balance your cash drawer at the end of every shift with zero variance as the standard, investigating any differences immediately and reporting discrepancies to the Branch Manager without delay
• Adhere to all operational procedures including dual-control requirements, vault access protocols, large cash transaction reporting, and currency transaction report preparation
• Follow all BSA/AML and OFAC screening requirements with every applicable transaction, recognizing that these controls exist to protect clients and the institution, not as obstacles to efficiency
• Complete all required compliance training on schedule and maintain current knowledge of the regulatory requirements applicable to the Universal Banker role
• Identify and escalate suspicious activity, potential fraud, or operational exceptions to the Branch Manager immediately and completely, with zero tolerance for informal resolution

Branch Support and Team Contribution

• Maintain a clean, organized, and professional teller station at all times, reflecting the standard of the Carver brand in the physical environment as well as the service delivered
• Support branch operations by participating in vault balancing, ATM replenishment and balancing, night deposit processing, and any other operational tasks assigned by the Branch Manager
• Contribute to a branch culture where colleagues support each other, hold a shared standard, and take pride in the work, the clients, and the community the branch serves
• Accept coaching from the Branch Manager, Assistant Branch Manager, or Senior Banking Associate with openness, incorporating feedback quickly and visibly

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

• High school diploma or equivalent required
• Previous cash handling experience in a retail, banking, or customer service environment
• Strong attention to detail and numerical accuracy, with the ability to balance and reconcile under pressure
• Demonstrated customer service skills with a genuine interest in helping people
• Availability for branch hours including rotating Saturdays

Preferred

• Prior banking or credit union experience in a teller or client service role
• Bilingual fluency in Spanish, Haitian Creole, French, or other languages spoken across Harlem, Brooklyn, and Queens
• Experience in a community bank, CDFI, or MDI environment
