The VCU School of Educations Department of Teaching and Learning is committed to fostering a positive environment for faculty, staff, and students. We are excited to invite qualified candidates for the position of University-Based Teacher Educator (UBTE).

The University-Based Teacher Educator is responsible for instructing, coaching, and supervising student teachers during their practical clinical work in school settings in the greater Richmond area.

Duties & Responsibilities -------------------------

The University-Based Teacher Educator plays a pivotal role in the field experience for the teacher candidate. They serve as an ambassador for VCU School of Education and support the success of the school-based teacher educator (SBTE) in their role with the intern. As such, they are expected to do the following:

  • Read and understand the School of Educations Intern, Extern, and Student Teaching Handbook.
  • Complete the Clinical Faculty (CF) training, the level of which will be determined by your hire date and most recent training. This will focus on coaching instead of telling guide vs sage.
  • Attend all UBTE meetings, including the orientation at the start of each semester and the monthly UBTE meetings via Zoom as well as individual check-ins as needed.
  • Facilitate an initial meeting with SBTE and teacher candidate to collaboratively establish shared norms, expectations, and responsibilities for the internship/student teaching experience during the first week of the placement.
  • Participate in required training on the Clinical Evaluation Continuum (CEC) and its scoring criteria. Key Elements to formatively and summatively assess Teacher Candidates. CEC training will take place in two parts: one general asynchronous training session and one synchronous program-specific training session.
  • Complete between 6-10 observations, minimum 8-10 observations in elementary, 6 observations in secondary, and submit coaching cycle documentation to the department.
  • Incorporate technological tools into the coaching process as appropriate, e.g., conducting Zoom conferences, reviewing digital lesson plans, or journals, providing digital feedback.
  • Communicate regularly with SBTE regarding teacher candidate progress and facilitate meetings to review collaborative reflection logs and CEC scores.
  • After meeting with the SBTE and teacher candidate, submit the CEC at midterm and final to our online system for students. With two placements, submissions will occur at the end of each placement.
  • Submit midterm and final grades for students to the department.
  • Supervise the completion of the clinical experience log that students must submit for licensure.
  • Communicate with the appropriate program coordinator as needed for student support. Supervisors are expected to use their VCU email address for all email communications.

Successful completion of all duties outlined above will factor into rehiring decisions.

Qualifications ------------

  • Minimum Qualifications:
  • Must hold a valid Virginia Collegiate Professional Certificate and Virginia Teaching Endorsement in one of the following areas: Art Education, Music Education, Special Education, Elementary Education, High School Science, Math, English, History, and Middle School Education.
  • At least 3 years of successful classroom teaching experience.
  • Valid drivers license and reliable transportation.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, particularly the ability to work well with students and faculty.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Computer literacy, including ability to use spreadsheets and online platforms.
  • Experience working with culturally and economically diverse populations.
  • Proficiency with Zoom or other virtual platforms.
  • Self-starter with the ability to work with little supervision.
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse learning environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.
  • Preferred Qualifications:
  • Doctorate in content area and previous higher education teaching experience.
  • Experience mentoring in an education setting.
  • Salary Range: $700 per 1 student
