Under the direct supervision of the senior photographer, this position is responsible for capturing high-quality, images that align with Old Dominion University's brand and marketing goals. This photographer will also be responsible for story-driven images that reflect the full range of activities at Old Dominion University for use in marketing efforts, the Monarch Magazine, the ODU website, etc. This position will work closely with marketing, design, and creative teams to plan photoshoots, brainstorm concepts, and deliver compelling visual content. This role will also be assigned to taking pictures at university events and activities (assigned at various times during the week, including evenings and weekends). Primary job duties consist of preparing for editorial photoshoots,images for marketing and editorial photoshoots under the direction of the Creative Director, editing images, maintaining library of archived images in a digital asset management system and packaging images as needed for final deliverables. This position requires professionalism, timeliness, responsiveness to requests and needs of campus and willingness to travel to different locations for photoshoots as needed.

Type of Recruitment Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Working knowledge of related computer software including Lightroom, Photoshop, Digital Asset Management (DAM) and Microsoft Office.
  • Exceptional oral and written communications skills.
  • Demonstrated skill with digital and mirrorless cameras and operating systems, particularly DSLR systems, including Nikon Z7ii..
  • Demonstrated skill in photographic studio and in-field lighting techniques including white balance, color-correcting, and flash.
  • Demonstrated skill in marketing photography for advertising and magazines.
  • Demonstrated skill in working effectively in a team setting to achieve goals.
  • Demonstrated ability to edit photographs in photo editing software.
  • Demonstrated ability to cultivate and maintain effective relationships with University departments, faculty, staff, students, outside vendors, agencies and contacts.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent attention to detail, with a keen eye for composition, lighting, and storytelling through images.

  • Working experience planning and organizing a variety of marketing photoshoots.

  • Prior experience in higher education marketing.
  • AP style photo caption writing and related software such as Grammarly and Chat GPT.
  • Some experience with branding, marketing and communications in a professional setting.

Conditions of Employment
