Job Description

DEFINITION AND DUTIES:

Under general supervision of the Fleet Maintenance Supervisor, performs upfitting emergency and other municipal vehicles with specialized equipment, including lights, sirens, radios, computer systems, camera systems, partitions, weapon racks, and other components. Performs mechanical work with vehicles and equipment in a wide range of maintenance, diagnosis, and repair activities.

Knowledge of:

• Vehicle wiring, circuits, and electrical troubleshooting

• 12V/24V DC systems and electrical safety

• Standard practices, materials, tools, equipment, techniques, and principals used in the upfitting field

• Troubleshooting and diagnosis processes and procedures used in upfitting, repair, and preventive maintenance programs

• Familiarity with law enforcement and specialty equipment vendors (e.g., Whelen, Havis,

• Gamber-Johnson, Motorola).

• OSHA regulations and EPA Guidelines and Standards affecting work

• English language to include basic grammar, sentence structure, and punctuation

Ability to:

• Diagnose and repair electronic and specialized equipment malfunctions on small, medium, and heavy-duty vehicles and equipment including hydraulic lifts

• Operate assigned equipment safely and in conformance with manufacturer’s recommendations

• Use a computer for the purposes of data entry, word processing, email, and Internet

• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the public

• Use independent judgement in accomplishing tasks

• Represent Johnson County and perform duties in a professional, responsible and trustworthy manner

• Keep accurate records

• Understand and follow written and oral directions

• Perform manual labor (moderate to heavy) for extended periods of time

• Handle moderate levels of stress, meet deadlines and solve problems appropriate to the position

•    Have sufficient vision which permits production and review of a wide variety of materials both electronic and hardcopy forms

•     Have sufficient manual dexterity to operate equipment and hand tools with moderate use, make handwritten notations, which permits light use of a keyboard and mouse

•    Train other mechanics for compliance with work policies, procedures, diagnostics, and safety standards

•    Occasionally work in unfavorable weather conditions

•    Work occasional overtime as needed

•    Be on call in emergency conditions

MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

High school graduate or equivalent AND six (6) years of experience in law enforcement or municipal vehicle electrical work and vehicle up-fitting OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. ASE Certification or Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) Certification is a plus but not required.

Special requirements: Insurable under county liability coverage.  Safe driving record.  Must pass background check, physical exam, drug test post-offer and be able to pass random drug and alcohol testing thereafter.

SPECIFIC DUTIES:to be performed satisfactorily with or without reasonable accommodation

The following duties are normal for this position.  These are not to be construed as exclusive or all inclusive.  Other duties may be required and assigned.

• Install, troubleshoot, and maintain specialized vehicle equipment including:

  • Emergency lighting systems (LED light bars, strobes, etc.),

  • Sirens,

  • Radios, antennas, and communication systems

  • In-vehicle computer systems (MDTs/laptops)

  • Prisoner transport partitions and safety cages

  • Weapon and equipment mounting systems

  • Removing existing interior

  • Wire and integrate systems into vehicle electrical networks, ensuring clean, safe, and functional installations.

  • Perform fabrication tasks such as mounting brackets, drilling, and custom panel installation.

  • Diagnose and resolve electrical issues.

  • Maintain accurate records of work performed, equipment installed, and vehicle status.

  • Ensure all work meets applicable codes, safety standards, and department specifications.

  • Schedule and perform maintenance activities of Fleet vehicles and specialized equipment.

  • Responsible for preventative maintenance functions on Johnson County vehicles, equipment, and property, as well as secure county property to prevent theft. 

  • Entering data that can be analyzed

  • Finding best price and repairs for vehicles and equipment inventory control

  • Diagnosing vehicle and equipment problems

  • Starting, maintaining, and closing work requests and work orders

  • Ensuring that the shop’s safety practices and OSHA laws are kept

  • Maintain records of work performed including but not limited to: county vehicle number repaired or replaced, county vehicle number repaired or maintained, labor hours required and equipment usage.

  • Design and fabricate special equipment, assist in inspection, adjustment, repair or replacement of worn out or defective parts of equipment.

  • Operate equipment skillfully, safely, and in conformance to regulations and directions.

  • Provide shop with various types of work, including but not limited to vehicle repairs, alignment machine operations, vehicle purchasing, and maintenance and repair of vehicles.

  • Train employees in the operation of specified equipment, proper maintenance techniques for equipment and vehicle operations.

  • Maintain inventory of motor vehicle parts

  • Perform back-up for Mechanic I, II, and Fleet Maintenance Supervisor as needed.

  • Participate in training/education opportunities and work-related meetings/conferences as requested.

  • Follow EPA Standards and regulations regarding hazardous waste materials and the proper handling of those materials.

  • Perform all work duties and activities in accordance with County policies, procedures, collective bargaining agreement, and safety practices.

  • Attend work regularly at the designated place and time.
