Virginia Techs Upward Bound programs is seeking instructors to teach non-credit courses to high school students during the summer program sessions from June 8-18 and July 6-16 in the following but not limited to subject areas:
Language Arts Science Math High School Level Foreign Languages Engineering Sociology Psychology Criminology Debate Financial Literacy Expressive Arts Entrepreneurship
Instructors may be hired for June only, July only, or both June and July. Summer Component classes are offered Monday-Wednesday or Tuesday-Thursday with Fridays being trip days for student participants. Instructors will be expected to teach in-person at Virginia Tech from June 8-18 (4 class sessions for each course) and/or July 6-16 (4 class sessions for each course). This schedule is subject to change based on availability of funds and programmatic needs.
Weekly Instructor meetings are scheduled every Monday at noon, with lunch provided during instructional weeks on June 8 and 15, and July 6 and 13.
Upward Bound Programs are dedicated to encouraging and preparing approximately 220 students from high schools throughout southwestern Virginia to pursue a college education. Upward Bound Summer Course Instructors will be responsible for creating an engaging project-based learning module which teaches subject area material and integrates research-based skills.
Students enrolled in the summer program will be first in their families to earn a four-year degree, meet income-eligibility guidelines, and/or meet the federal definition for high-risk of academic failure. The summer program is focused on helping students develop the skills necessary for success in both secondary and post-secondary education.
Responsibilities of the Summer Course Instructor
Compensation and Requirements
Instructors will earn a minimum of $1275 per June or July only course and $2550 for courses taught through June and July. The number of courses will be determined by program needs, available funding, and student enrollment in the program.
