POSITION SUMMARY

The Development Services Department is seeking an Urban Engineer I.

The Urban Engineer I examines a variety of engineering and construction plans and permits to determine whether plans, specifications, and materials conform to legally established codes and requirements to ensure minimum City engineering adequacy standards and principles are met, such as: on-site and roadway geometry, safe and adequate access, site drainage, stormwater, water/wastewater, paving, grading, construction operations, surface reconstruction, provision for easements and other and right-of-way and site improvements, and coordination of utility reviews.

This is a Management Category IV position which includes five (5) additional Management Vacation Days and a Vehicle Allowance of $120/month.

This job classification is included within the bargaining unit represented by Federation of Public Employees and therefore is subject to the terms and conditions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the City of Fort Lauderdale and Federation of Public Employees.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Essential functions are the basic job duties that an employee must be able to perform, with or without reasonable accommodation.   • Reviews smaller scale development permit applications with senior staff oversight, including civil plans and specifications for project improvements within the public rights-of-way for Ordinance and Code compliance
  • Calculates and/or reviews the Capital Expansion Fees for proposed private developments
  • Performs complex mathematical calculations to confirm engineering designs submitted by Engineer/ Architect of Records are in conformance with Citys and other Regulatory Standards and requirements
  • Confers with senior staff on problems of design, construction, or maintenance of municipal Public Services facilities; determines permitting requirements and obtains necessary permits; prepares reports and makes recommendations relating to the conduct of engineering activities
  • Electronically prepares reports and maintains records of work performed and properly enters information, including documents and images using provided hardware and software systems
  • Prepares plan review comments; updates the Citys online permit software system
  • Responds to inquiries from citizens, permit applicants, associations, or other governmental agencies
  • Attends pre-construction meetings with applicants/contractors and City Inspectors to discuss engineering requirements and compliance
  • Oversees site inspections of proposed work or work in progress to verify project status
  • May function as project lead
  • Performs related work as required

JOB REQUIREMENTS, PREFERENCES & WORK ENVIRONMENT

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelors Degree in civil engineering, construction management or closely related field
  • One (1) year of experience demonstrating that you have examined a variety of engineering and/or construction plans and permits to determine if the plans, specifications, and materials conform to legally established codes and requirements
  • Additional experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Engineer in Training Certification (EIT)

As public servants, employees may be required to work immediately before, during, and/or after an emergency. All employees must be available and able to work assigned shifts as determined by their Department Heads.

PHYSICAL STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

The position involves medium physical demands, such as exerting up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force frequently, and/or 10 lbs. of force constantly to move objects. This position is primarily sedentary but may involve frequent outside work.
