Summary:
Alabama Cooperative Extension System (ACES) (www.aces.edu) is seeking applications for the position of Urban Regional Extension Agent (UREA) in Forestry, Wildlife and Natural Resources in Houston and Dale Counties to identify, assess, prioritize needs, and provide learning opportunities to urban audiences. The UREA in the position will work in the Forestry, Wildlife, and Natural Resources Program Priority Team (PPT) to support community programming under the guidance of the Extension Specialist.
Examples of Duties
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- The selected candidate will work as part of a team under the direction of the Extension Specialist, delivering quality programs using a variety of educational materials and teaching methods to reach varied target audiences in the assigned county.
- This position is a 100% assignment in the program areas of Forestry, Wildlife and Natural Resources.
- The selected individual will promote, market, and implement related educational programs which will include but are not limited to soil and water conservation, wildlife management, waste management, watershed management, natural resources management, disaster preparedness, green-space development, urban and community forestry, agroforestry, and managing home environment.
- Required to utilize public service announcements, social media, news articles, fact sheets, brochures, flyers, and other innovative marketing tools.
- Recruit county volunteers, program partners, and collaborators.
- Responsible for developing and managing a program advisory committee for program input.
- Develop community leadership and other community assessments to support county program directions.
- The UREA seeks funding support through grants, contracts, and program agreements with relevant agencies and organizations.
- Responsible for conducting surveys to collect impact data, measure effectiveness, and report accomplishments.
- Evaluate, analyze, and interpret program data to complete required organization reports and show program impact.
Typical Qualifications
Minimum Position Requirements (including years of experience, certifications, licenses, etc.):
- A bachelors degree in environmental science, natural resource management, plant or soil science, forestry, biology, or related sciences. Degree may be in different areas, but candidate must provide a broad familiarity or understanding of natural resources conservation, environmental science, urban and community forestry, wildlife, and soil and water sciences.
- Ability to travel and work flexible hours that can include nights and weekends is required to fulfill assigned responsibilities. Travel is assigned to a geographical area requires use of a reliable personal vehicle to conduct Extension business. (Travel reimbursement is available).
- Ability to provide hands-on demonstrations of program recommended methods and practices.
- Ability to work with minimum supervision in various indoor and outdoor settings while implementing and evaluating impact driven programming with an understanding of sociological impacts, and exhibit leadership and people skills.
- Intermediate to Advances experience with Microsoft Office Suite.
- Applicants must have a demonstrated interest and enthusiasm for working with urban audiences to deliver new and innovative programs.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills required.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree is preferred and does not require experience to apply. Graduate level courses and specialized certifications in related fields are preferred.
- Some experience in forestry, wildlife, and natural resource management is preferred.
- Ability to speak Spanish is a plus.
- Use of computer applications, programs, social media, and other communications methods is required.
- Ability to collect, analyze, and report impact data for reports, and to appropriate stakeholders.
- Must be able to work effectively as a member of a team, work with diverse groups, be self-motivated, and manage time and resources.
