The City of Pleasanton is seeking a dedicated and hardworking Utilities Maintenance Worker to support the operation and maintenance of the City's Utilities Maintenance Division. This hands-on role includes assisting with potable drinking water and sewer collection system repairs, installing and maintaining water meters, responding to customer leak concerns, and performing essential preventative maintenance such as valve exercising, hydrant maintenance, CCTV, and flushing of sewer collection systems. In This Role, You Will

  • Assist with repairs to the City's water distribution and sewer collection system.
  • Install and maintain water meters, and flush and maintain sewer pump stations.
  • Respond to customer water leak reports and provide courteous service.
  • Perform preventative maintenance, including valve exercising and fire hydrant maintenance.
  • Support the overall operation of water distribution and collection system assets as part of a cohesive team.

Minimum Qualifications

Education / Experience:

  • A typical qualifying background would be graduation from high school, or GED equivalent, and two years of relevant experience.

License:

  • Possession of a valid California Driver's License is required.
  • Class A California Drivers License within one year of employment.

Other Requirements:

  • Work in all weather conditions
  • Be exposed to dust, dirt, noise, moving traffic and its exhaust fumes, paint, epoxy, asphalt, smoke fumes, herbicides / pesticides, sewage, recycled water, etc.
  • Work in or around confined spaces.
  • Wear uniform and safety gear as required by OSHA and furnished by the City.
  • Climb and work from ladders up to 12 feet high or lifts/bucket trucks up to 55 feet above the ground in order to complete assigned maintenance or tasks.
  • Mandatory participation in Department of Transportation Drug and Alcohol testing programming.
  • Work weekends and respond to emergency call out when necessary.

Knowledge of:

  • Proper methods and procedures of tasks within the Utilities Division.
  • Common safety procedures, including safe lifting techniques and equipment operation.
  • Basic math.

Skill and ability to:

  • Follow oral and written instructions. Prepare equipment for work tasks. Maintain records and reports. Perform basic arithmetic calculations.
  • Read and understand materials such as safety manuals, maintenance manuals, and operating instructions for tools, machinery, and equipment.
  • Read maps and schematic diagrams.
  • Use computer for work activity.
  • Write legibly.
  • Maintain vehicles, tools, and equipment, including basic troubleshooting to identify and correct minor mechanical and electrical problems.
  • Appropriately select and safely use hand tools and power tools, and equipment in area of assignment.
  • Safely and properly operate heavy equipment such as backhoe or roller, and drive trucks, with trailers, including backing and dumping.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisor, co-workers, and the public.
  • Independently lift and move materials and equipment weighting up to 50 pounds frequently and up to 100 pounds with assistance occasionally.
  • Perform physical labor throughout the workday, involving frequent bending, stooping, and twisting.
  • Hear and speak clearly and loudly enough to communicate with co-workers over traffic and machinery noise and to use a two-way radio or other communication devices.
  • Stand for up to two hours at a time and for up to six hours a day.
  • Work effectively as part of a crew.
  • Remain attentive to details of job duties and identify potential hazards.
  • Follow applicable traffic codes and regulations, and proper traffic control procedures.
  • Work independently.
