FULL TIME UTILITIES MECHANIC II

The City of Martinsburg is now accepting applications for a full-time Utilities Mechanic II.

The Utilities Mechanic II is a skilled technical position responsible for maintaining and repairing a diverse fleet of automotive, construction, and utility equipment to ensure safe and reliable operations. Working under the supervision of the Utilities Chief Operator, this role combines preventative maintenance planning with hands-on diagnosis and repair of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems across both gasoline and diesel-powered equipment. The position requires strong technical expertise, including the use of diagnostic tools and computerized systems, as well as the ability to perform complex repairs such as engine rebuilds, transmission work, and system troubleshooting.

In addition to shop-based work, the Utilities Mechanic II provides field service and emergency roadside repairs, often working in varying environmental conditions and around heavy machinery. The role also includes managing inventory and parts, maintaining detailed maintenance records, assisting with equipment specifications, and supporting propane system installation and service. Success in this position requires a commitment to safety, the ability to work independently, and strong communication skills to effectively interact with coworkers, City officials, and the public.

The ideal candidate brings a combination of education and at least six years of relevant experience, along with a thorough knowledge of mechanical systems and repair practices. This physically demanding role requires the ability to lift heavy equipment, work in confined or challenging positions, and adapt to changing priorities while maintaining professionalism and high-quality work. The Utilities Mechanic II plays a critical role in supporting the operational readiness and reliability of the Utilities Department's equipment and services.
