GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB

Assists in the construction, maintenance and repair of water and sewer systems.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

  • Assists with installation, maintenance and repairs of water taps, water lines, sewer lines, manholes and fire hydrants.
  • Locates water and wastewater lines for preparing work sites and for outside servicers and contractors to protect County system lines from damage.
  • Operates vacuum truck and excavation equipment.
  • Assists in the repair of water leaks, stoppages, lines, sewers, valves, manhole rings and covers.
  • Inventories equipment, supplies and materials.
  • Reads blueprints and engineering drawings.
  • Utilizes hand-held manual, air and gas-powered tools and equipment in the performance of duties (i.e., pipe wrenches, pipe cutters, saws, cement mixers, air compressors, tapping machines, pipe threaders).
  • Addresses and resolves public inquiries and concerns.
  • Ensures that vehicles and equipment are properly operated and maintained.
  • Participates in restoring work sites to serviceable condition (i.e., repairing asphalt and concrete, filling holes).
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education, Training and Experience. High school diploma or GED supplemented by one (1) year of general construction or other manual labor-intensive experience with exposure to severe work environment. Experience with installation and maintenance of water and/or sewer systems is preferred.

Licenses and/or Certifications. Requires a valid driver license. Must be able to obtain and maintain a Defense Biometrics Identification System (DBIDS) badge. A Class 'A' commercial driver license ("CDL") or a Class 'B' CDL with tanker endorsement is preferred, depending on assignment.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Physical Requirements: Must be able to operate trucks and various hand-held manual and gas-powered tools and equipment. Must be able to exert 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push and pull or otherwise move objects. Requires the ability to stand and walk for prolonged periods of time. Tasks include considerable bending, stooping, climbing, etc., and working in confined spaces. Physical demands are in excess of sedentary work.

Language Ability: Requires ability to read a variety of records, policy and procedure manuals, codes, etc., in moderately complex technical terminology. Requires the ability to read and interpret blueprints, construction/engineering plans and specifications. Requires the ability to prepare forms and reports using prescribed formats. Must be able to communicate effectively in Standard English, and in the various professional languages relevant to the primary functions of the department.

Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply principles of logical thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions; to interpret a variety of technical instructions in written, mathematical or diagrammatic form; to make independent judgments in absence of supervision; to acquire knowledge of topics related to primary occupation. Requires the application of principles of influence systems and synthesis functions.

Numerical Aptitude: Requires the ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide; calculate decimals and percentages; determine discount, ratio and proportion, profit and loss.

Interpersonal Temperament: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress when confronted with emergencies or tight deadlines. Requires the ability to exercise consistent tact and courtesy when in frequent contact with various professionals, county staff, and the general public.
