JOB SUMMARY/OVERVIEW OF THE POSITION: This position works in the area of water construction, repair, maintenance, and installation of water systems. An employee in this position must possess a high level of independent motivation, exceptional judgement, and ability to work outdoors in all type of weather conditions. An employee in this position is required to be available for on-call rotation as well as emergencies within the City’s jurisdiction. May be scheduled to work nights, weekends and/or holidays. Primary functions are directed through and supervised the Utilities Superintendent or designated supervisor.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • ?ands-on installation, repair and maintenance of piping and related water system, components, and devices. Works under direct supervision of a Lead Utilities Technician or Supervisor. Work includes digging, trenching, back filling excavations, truck driving, use of hand and power tools, use of sewer cleaning equipment, and lifting in a safe and proficient manner.
  • Work safely, diligently and responsibly on water systems.
  • ?dress customer concerns in a professional, timely, and accurate manner using good judgement, skill and tact to achieve a suitable outcome for all parties.
  • Be able to understand instructions in both verbal and written formats.
  • Work with a Lap Top Computer/Tablet to complete work orders in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Operation of construction equipment in the repair and maintenance of water facilities and systems.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Ability to comprehend and understand detailed plans and technical documents, manuals, regulations, policies and procedures pertaining to water systems.
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to understand and follow directions in English sufficiently to successfully preform required job duties.
  • Ability to preform assigned duties in a timely and effective manner while adhering to safety standards.
  • Ability to follow and complete assignment accurately and on time, using tact, professionalism, and good judgement.
  • Knowledge of and preforming operator maintenance on all department tools and equipment.
  • Basic knowledge of construction equipment and ability to use equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Ability to and willingness to provide the highest level of customer service, interacting with the public in a courteous and efficient manner. Interact effectively and respectfully with supervisors and co-workers.
  • Actively support Department’s and City’s goals, programs, objectives and comply with all City regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Ability to maintain an acceptable work schedule and attendance record. Must be insurable by the City’s insurance carrier and maintain an acceptable driving record.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS LISTED AS FOLLOWS:

PHYSICAL SKILLS: Use of both hands with majority of fingers in each hand. 20/40 vision (in at least one eye) and be able to hear and understand and verbally communicate in English at normal conversational levels in a typical governmental office (corrective devices acceptable). Occasional light lifting and/or carrying, bending, stooping, working, standing and pulling. Must be able to easily carry (70) lbs.

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Minimum of a High School Diploma or GED. At least one year experience performing the essential job functions mentioned above.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS OR REGISTRATIONS: Valid Florida Class C Driver’s License class B preferred. Ability to obtain a Florida level 3 water distribution license, Confined Space certification and Trenching and Shoring certification within one year of employment is required.
