JOB SUMMARY

Under general supervision, the Utility Crew Leader plans, oversees, and participates in the work of crews performing installation, maintenance, repair, and construction work on the City's utility infrastructure

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Employees are required to be in attendance and prepared to begin work at their assigned work location on the specified days and hours. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Receives and evaluates daily assignments; assigns tasks to work crews; trains crews for work assignments in a safe and timely manner to ensure all crew members follow City regulations and rules; implements disciplinary actions for failure to comply with rules.
  • Maintains collections systems; installs taps; maintains manholes and lift stations; removes blockages from service and main lines.
  • Installs lateral lines and side clean outs; oversees and participates in the maintenance of sewer equipment to include vacuum truck, rotor rooter machine, suction truck, and jet trailer.
  • Identifies cross connections; repairs and maintains water service and main lines, valves, and hydrants; oversees new residential and commercial service tap installations, services, and mains.
  • Participates in planning valve exercise and replacement programs.
  • Turns services on and off for customers; reads and reports meter numbers; repairs and maintains meter services; conducts flow test on meters.
  • Addresses and resolves citizen complaints and concerns.
  • Performs related duties as required or assigned.

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

Work is performed in a standard office environment and throughout the city at utility treatment facilities and work sites. May be exposed to hazardous chemicals, potentially dangerous tools, equipment, and machinery, noxious fumes and odors, electrical and traffic hazards, and inclement weather conditions. May be required to work in confined spaces, climb in and out of trenches, and lift and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent AND five (5) years of progressively responsible public works maintenance and construction experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Knowledge of applicable laws, codes, and TCEQ regulations.
  • Must possess a Class B Commercial Drivers License with tanker endorsement.
  • Must possess a Class II Wastewater Collection license or higher.
  • Must possess a Class C Water Distribution license or higher.
  • Knowledge of applicable laws, codes, and regulations, including safety policies and project management.
  • Experience in supervision, leadership, and inventory management.
  • Proficiency in records maintenance, report preparation, and filing systems.
  • Skilled in utility system installation, maintenance, and repair.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical documents, schematics, and manuals.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Competence in operating tools, equipment, and machinery.
  • Ability to enforce safety protocols and meet deadlines effectively.
