Job Specifications

Support the delivery of safe and reliable natural gas service while advancing your engineering career with a team dedicated to public service excellence. This position offers the opportunity to work on a variety of engineering projects involving utility infrastructure, equipment, and system operations. Youll collaborate with experienced professionals, apply innovative solutions to complex challenges, and help maintain the essential services that power our community.

What Youll Do:

• Contribute to projects that maintain and improve critical natural gas infrastructure serving homes and businesses throughout the community.
• Support the development of engineering standards, mapping systems, and construction practices that promote safety, efficiency, and reliability.
• Assist with pipeline integrity and compliance initiatives, helping ensure the Division meets industry best practices and regulatory requirements.
• Perform technical studies, cost analyses, and feasibility assessments to help guide infrastructure investments and operational improvements.
• Evaluate engineering plans, consultant recommendations, and project proposals to support informed decision-making and successful project outcomes.
• Provide project coordination and field support while collaborating with diverse teams dedicated to delivering exceptional utility services.

Minimum Training & Experience

At the City's Electric & Gas Utility, our mission is to enrich the quality of life in Tallahassee by providing quality energy services and being leaders in our organization, community, and industry. Currently, we are looking for a motivated individual with a strong desire to learn and grow professionally to join our team. This position requires the ability to work both independently and collaboratively across City departments to deliver successful projects. The ideal candidate will possess excellent communication skills and be able to effectively engage with developers, customers, contractors, and other stakeholders to support project objectives and provide outstanding internal and external customer service.

General Requirements (ALL Levels)

• Bachelors degree in engineering or related field
• Must have a valid Class E State Drivers license (or equivalent) at the time of appointment
• Must be able to serve on-call and are subject to having to work outside of their assigned shift/schedule to meet operational needs
• Obtain GTIs Gas Distribution Engineering I and Gas Distribution Operations self-study courses within the first two years of employment
• Individuals in this classification are considered essential during emergency and storm situations and must be able to work 16 hours per day for extended periods of time and may be required to be away from their family

Gas Utility Engineer I:

• No prior Gas Utility experience required

Gas Utility Engineer II:

• Three (3) years of directly related experience in gas utility or similar operations. NOTE: A masters degree in engineering may be substituted for one year of the required experience
• Must have or obtain a NACE CP1 or other approved cathodic protection certification within six (6) months of employment

Gas Utility Engineer III:

• Seven (7) years of directly related experience in gas utility or similar operations. NOTE: A masters degree may be substituted for one year of the required experience.
• Must have or obtain a NACE CP3 or other approved cathodic protection certification within six (6) months of employment.

Salary Range

$29.0888 to $78.9348/hourly. Hiring rate generally will not exceed $58.1778/hour

Additional Information

A Professional Engineer (PE) designation is preferred, but not required. Candidates who are licensed or actively pursuing licensure are encouraged to apply.
