Asplundh Engineering Services (AES) is seeking a Senior Equipment Engineer for the Mid-Atlantic region
We are seeking a highly experienced Senior Equipment Engineer with over 7 years of technical expertise in electric utility systems, specializing in substation design and critical equipment engineering. This role demands an accomplished engineering professional with deep knowledge of substation components and a track record of success across projects in equipment design, purchasing, product development, testing, and commissioning.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead the engineering lifecycle for high voltage substation projects, including equipment specification, selection, and performance evaluation across voltage classes from 115kV to 500kV.
  • Manage and execute gas insulated substation equipment design and integration—including circuit breakers, transformers, switchgear, auxiliary service panels, AC/DC systems, and control enclosures.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on major equipment features and applications.
  • Review equipment drawings to ensure alignment with client specifications, substation design, and project objectives
  • Conduct root cause analyses and equipment failure investigations to drive design improvements and reliability enhancements.
  • Champion the use of standards and best practices in engineering drawings, relay settings, equipment layouts, and interconnection diagrams.
  • Coordinate with multi-disciplinary teams and consultants to ensure timely and high-quality delivery of engineering deliverables.
  • Review and approve material requisitions, factory acceptance tests, and ensure adherence to national electrical code (NEC), utility specifications, and safety regulations.
  • Mentor engineering staff and promote knowledge-sharing across departments, especially in the areas of equipment commissioning, protection and control, and power system modeling.
 Key Qualifications:
  • 7+ years of experience in electric utility engineering, with a strong background in substation and distribution systems.
  • Extensive knowledge in the design and application of substation equipment, including high voltage applications of Gas Insulated Switchgear, Power Transformers, Circuit Breakers, Switches, Control Buildings, Station Service Transformers, ATS, Panelboards, medium/high-voltage cables, and protective relays.
  • Bachelor’s Degree with a strong foundation in electrical engineering principles and utility applications.
  • Effective communicator with strong technical writing, presentation, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
  • Self-managed and independent
 Preferred Skills:
  • Registered Professional Engineer
  • Passionate about mentoring, cross-training initiatives, and building high-performing engineering teams.
  • Familiar with regulatory and compliance considerations in utility operations and infrastructure upgrades.
 Requirements:
  • Remote Position with periodic travel to Baltimore, MD
    • Approximately 10% Travel
    • Travel outside of US not required
  • Work hours 8am – 5pm ET, M-F
  • Communicate directly with client managers and staff
  Compensation Range & Benefits 
  • Competitive estimated compensation starting range: $125,000.00, depending on experience and location.
