Position Description

Tacoma Public Utilities (TPU) is seeking a relationship-driven, strategic Key Account Relationship Manager to serve as the primary business partner for some of our largest commercial, industrial, and institutional customers. In this highly visible role, youll work across Tacoma Power, Tacoma Water, Tacoma Rail, Customer Services, and City departments to deliver exceptional customer service, develop long-term account strategies, and support initiatives that strengthen our community and local economy.

As a trusted advisor, youll help provide key account customers with solutions that meet evolving business needs, coordinate major projects, process improvements and infrastructure planning, present conservation and sustainability programs, and coordinate communications with internal teams and departments. This position is ideal for someone who thrives on building strong partnerships, solving complex challenges, and collaborating across organizations to create outstanding customer experiences.

This position is on call 24/7 to manage supply issues for their assigned key accounts and may be required to work evening and weekend hours in addition to their regular work hours.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the primary contact and relationship manager for assigned commercial, industrial, and institutional customers, coordinating services and identifying and resolving complex issues across Tacoma Power, Tacoma Water, Tacoma Rail, Customer Services, and City departments.
  • Manage the acquisition and maintenance of key account customer information and data.
  • Develop and maintain strategic account plans and profiles by understanding customer operations, business goals, strategic or confidential planning issues, utility usage, infrastructure needs, and long-term growth objectives.
  • Lead or participate in cross-functional process improvement initiatives and special projects that enhance customer service, operational effectiveness, and collaboration across TPU divisions.
  • Interpret utility policies, procedures, contracts, and applicable regulations while providing recommendations to improve business practices and customer outcomes.
  • Coordinate planned and unplanned utility activities, including outage communications, infrastructure projects, and the development and processing of key account contracts and franchise agreements in partnership with internal stakeholders.
  • Analyze customer utility usage, financial and operational data, and rate structures to provide accurate information, forecasts, budgeting support, and strategic recommendations.
  • Present and support utility programs, products, conservation initiatives, and sustainability services that improve customer value and support energy and water efficiency goals.
  • Collaborate with Economic Development and community partners to support business attraction, expansion, and retention by providing utility planning information, cost estimates, and development insights.

Qualifications

Minimum Education*

Bachelors degree in business or public administration, marketing, energy management, planning or related field

Minimum Experience*

4 years of experience in commercial/industrial or residential energy services development, marketing, delivery or management

  • Relevant education and experience may substitute for one another on a year-for-year basis.

Licensing, Certifications and Other Requirements

State of Washington Drivers License

Complete and maintain:

  • Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) training

Other Employment Information

Direct Deposit: Employees are paid on a bi-weekly schedule by direct deposit.

Salary Increases: Based on satisfactory job performance, the City provides for a regular progression of salary increases for most classifications according to the salary schedule.

Union Affiliation: Many job classifications are covered by union security provisions which require union membership, dues, or payment of equivalent service fees.
