Anemployee in this class performs a variety of unskilled semi-skilled andskilled equipment operation and labor tasks in the construction maintenanceand repair of utility lines and related appendices. Work involves tasks to dig build repair andreplace sections of water and sewer lines and services hydrant and valvemaintenance meter installs and repair etc. and using a variety of tools to performthe assigned tasks. As needed theemployee operates light to heavy equipment such as backhoes excavatorsloaders forklifts compactions equipment and multiple hand-held devices insituations requiring skill and care to dig around underground and overheadutility lines which involves high voltage electric near traffic in trafficin both minor streets and multilane NCDOT highways beside houses behindhouses between houses and in other tight places etc. Employees are subject to working in both insideand outside environments and in confined spaces in extreme hot and coldweather and exposure to various hazards such as loud noises vibration movingmechanical parts electrical current chemicals fumes odors dusts mistsgases poor ventilation and oils. Workaround wastewater is subject to the final standards of OSHA on blood bornepathogens. Employees are also requiredto serve rotating on-call and call-back work. Work is performed under regular supervision and is evaluated throughobservation and inspection for adherence to instructions and standard trade andsafety practices.
