General Description

JOIN OUR TEAM AS A UTILITY WORKER I/TRAINEE

Start your career with Pasco County Utilities as a Utility Worker I/Trainee! Employees in this class earn experience performing a variety of manual laboring tasks pertaining to the operation and maintenance of Pasco County Utilities infrastructure. This includes unskilled to limited semiskilled work assisting in the installation, maintenance, and repair of the Countys Wastewater Collection and Transmission Systems. This position is required to perform on-call duty on a routine basis.

  • Pasco County provides a possible 5-year career path for advancement from a Utility Worker I/Trainee to Utility Worker II, Utility Worker III, Wastewater System Tech III, Wastewater System Tech II and then Wastewater System Tech I when certifications, license, experience, and performance requirements and expectations are met.

Essential Job Functions

Assists with the installation, maintenance and repairs of collection lines, force mains, lift stations, and plant facilities. Responds to service requests and emergency callouts for repairing and servicing routine and emergency minor and major wastewater line breaks to minimize service interruption to customers. Completes assigned daily work orders on laptop or another mobile device using asset management work order software. GPS wastewater assets. Evaluates, coordinates, and repairs collection service laterals to minimize service interruption to customers. Performs the installation of new collection connections to lots where service is available including all piping and fittings while ensuring the proper fall is achieved to allow un- obstructed flow. Investigates customer complaints concerning utilities systems, determines and takes the appropriate corrective action, properly documents findings and actions taken on work orders. Locate, record, and update information regarding wastewater collection lines, service lines, meters, and valves throughout the collection and transmission systems to aid in the effective and efficient isolation of leaks and breaks to minimize interruption of service to customers. Maintains an adequate stock of materials on his assigned vehicle to ensure new connections and repairs are made efficiently and effectively. Takes On-Call duty on a rotating basis to respond to all after hour and weekend call outs as needed. Interacts with public contractors, and vendors in an effective and professional manner. Accurately completes daily inspection and maintenance records for vehicles and equipment. Demonstrates commitment and dependability with regular attendance, punctuality, and adherence to schedule of availability. Ability to lift and/or move up to 80 pounds and push or pull heavy objects. Performs other related tasks as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Understand and follow verbal and written instructions and communicate clearly and concisely.
  • Knowledge of tools, fittings, and cleaning out lines.
  • Ability to drive a truck.
  • Ability to operate line clearing equipment and pumps.
  • Ability to use a variety of hand and power tools.
  • Read for comprehension and interpret plans, blueprints, and specifications.
  • Accurately complete records, documents, and reports.
  • Interact with co-workers, supervisors, and the public in a professional and courteous manner.

Minimum Requirements

PHYSICAL SKILLS/WORKING CONDITIONS: Ability to lift and/or move up to 80 pounds and push or pull heavy objects. May use a handling device (dolly, cart, etc.) or work with another team member to lift and/or move excessively heavy objects. Ability to frequently bend, climb, stoop, squat, and walk. Ability to communicate effectively using verbal, written and visual communication. Ability to work outside, occasionally under adverse conditions. Ability to perform strenuous physical labor for extended periods of time. Work location and shift may vary for this position.

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Graduation from High School or an acceptable equivalency diploma.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS OR REGISTRATIONS: Must possess a valid Florida drivers license.

Note: Candidates may be promoted to Utility Worker II after six (6) months of employment and upon completion of Confined Space Certification, Trenching and Shoring Certification, CPR training and FEMA Course 100 and FEMA Course 700.
