Job Summary

The Vascular Access Technician is responsible for providing safe, accurate, and compassionate vascular access and specimen collection services for patients across all age groups in a fast-paced acute care environment. This role performs venipuncture, phlebotomy, assisted line collections, arterial and capillary specimen collections, and blood culture collection while ensuring compliance with infection prevention standards, regulatory requirements, and organizational policies. The technician collaborates with multidisciplinary healthcare teams to support timely diagnosis and exceptional patient care while maintaining the highest standards of quality, patient safety, and specimen integrity.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform vascular access procedures, including venipuncture, phlebotomy, assisted line collections, capillary collections, arterial specimen collection, and blood culture collection using approved clinical techniques.
  • Obtain high-quality blood specimens while adhering to safety protocols, infection prevention practices, and regulatory standards.
  • Accurately verify patient identity using approved identification procedures before specimen collection.
  • Ensure proper specimen labeling, handling, transportation, and documentation to maintain specimen integrity and laboratory quality standards.
  • Operate Point-of-Care (POC) testing equipment and perform testing in accordance with established quality control procedures.
  • Provide rapid response support during medical emergencies requiring vascular access or specimen collection.
  • Deliver vascular access and specimen collection services throughout multiple patient care settings, including medical-surgical units, emergency departments, intensive care units, operating rooms, pediatric units, and other inpatient or outpatient clinical areas.
  • Utilize electronic health records (EHR), laboratory information systems (LIS), and other computer systems to accurately document procedures and patient information.
  • Maintain strict patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA, organizational policies, and regulatory requirements.
  • Foster positive customer relations through professional communication with patients, families, physicians, nurses, laboratory personnel, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, empathy, and patient-centered care while minimizing patient discomfort during procedures.
  • Prioritize workload effectively while maintaining accuracy and efficiency in a high-volume clinical environment.
  • Apply critical thinking, sound clinical judgment, and problem-solving skills to address routine and complex patient care situations.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision while contributing effectively as a collaborative member of the healthcare team.
  • Follow written and verbal instructions accurately while adapting to changing clinical priorities and maintaining composure in high-pressure situations.
  • Assist with orientation, competency validation, and training of new employees and students.
  • Perform duties requiring prolonged standing, walking, transporting equipment, and pushing supply carts throughout the facility.
