Position Details

Title: Special Education Teacher, Transition Program

Status: Full-time and in-person

Union: Professional Staff

Reports To: Jr/Sr High School Principal

JOB GOALS

The primary job goal is to provide specialized instruction to high school students with disabilities in the areas of transition, including employment, education/training, independent living, and community participation.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education & Certification: Bachelor's degree in education required; Michigan teaching certificate with an endorsement in special education, required

Work Experience: Three years of experience, preferred

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Skills:

• Knowledge and familiarity with a variety of disability areas
• Communicate and collaborate with others in a supportive and professional way
• Lead and support the work of the program assistant
• Provide specialized instruction and IEP-related work for assigned caseload
• Develop and implement student and classroom procedures and plans to provide consistency and effective classroom and behavior management
• Co-lead program placement processes
• Maintain complete, accurate and timely records and student progress data
• Keep up to date with current practices, research, and educational trends
• Handle confidential student and parent information in a professional and ethical manner
• Demonstrate reliable attendance and punctuality
• Make student-centered decisions
• Adhere to federal, state and district policies and procedures
• Complete assigned responsibilities within agreed upon timelines
• Seek ongoing improvement and accept feedback in a professional way
• Perform additional tasks, responsibilities and duties as assigned by the Principal

Physical Requirements:

• Sitting and working on a computer for long periods of time
• Stand, bend and move throughout the day
• Travel during the day to provide community-based instruction
• Lift at least 15 pounds
