Job Description

The City of Renton is hiring for a Vehicle and Equipment Mechanic 2. Our Mechanics put their skills to good use by working on all kinds of motor vehicles and Public Works maintenance equipment. As a Vehicle & Equipment Mechanic 2, you will diagnose, repair, handle preventive maintenance, inspections, and other services on a wide range of equipment, including passenger vehicles, dump trucks, heavy machinery, and various City of Renton maintenance tools.

To join us in this role you will need:

• A valid Class A Commercial Drivers License
• 2 years vocational automotive technical training and 2 years experience in the maintenance, repair, and overhaul of heavy and light gasoline, diesel, and battery-powered equipment and electrical systems
• Or 4 years of relevant education and experience

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Diagnose, repair, and maintain heavy vehicles, trucks, and other large and small diesel, battery, and gasoline-powered equipment, as follows:

• Service and repair steering, hydraulic, electrical, heating and cooling systems.

• Repair drive trains and axles, including multi-axles and controls.

• Perform major overhauls of single-engine and multi-engine systems, including propane and diesel engines.

• Repair and adjust transmissions, high-pressure pumps and compressors, valves, differentials, clutches, rear ends, and power take-offs.

• Service, repair, replace, and adjust engines, carburetors, fuel injection systems, and valves.

• Replace, fit and adjust pistons, rings and bearings.

• Clean, repair and replace fuel pumps, fuel lines, gauges and electrical wiring systems.

• Repair and replace alternators, voltage regulators, batteries, and electrical wiring.

• Adjust and reline brakes and maintain, rebuild and replace air and hydraulic brake system components.

• Perform front end alignment and repair and change and balance tires.

• Diagnose a variety of vehicle computers and computerized sensors and replace faulty components and parts as needed.

• Perform electrical and acetylene welding, brazing, soldering and regular routine service on City-owned tractors, machinery and equipment, and fabricate special equipment, tools, parts, and structures as needed.

• Test drive and evaluate new equipment for operation, repair and maintenance.

• Determine salvage of vehicles and equipment.

• Operate a variety of equipment and machinery including pressure and system testers, ARC and oxy-acetylene welders, computerized diagnostic equipment, scopes, digital meters, gauges, lathe, grinders, tire changing and balancing machines, hoists and jacks, emission control test equipment and a variety of power and hand tools.

• Respond to emergency requests, and drive to City sites to perform repairs to City vehicles as needed.

• Lubricate parts and change oil and filters on City-owned equipment.

• Inspect and repair tire punctures and damage as appropriate.

• Recharge and install new batteries, and replace headlights, taillights, and turn signals.

• Enter into the maintenance tracking system safety, preventive maintenance, and general work performed on each vehicle and City equipment.

• Assist with developing and implementing a preventive maintenance program, to include how worked performed, parts used, time requirements, safety records, etc. will be maintained.

• Determine necessary parts for the shop function, order parts through requisition for vehicles and equipment, and maintain vendor lists.

• Perform safety checks and inspections on City trucks, passenger vehicles and other mechanical equipment.

• Ensure vehicles meet State and local standards for public transportation and safety compliance.

• Maintain shop area, equipment, and tools in a safe, clean, and orderly condition. Determine the need for outside assistance in major repairs involving City-owned vehicles and equipment, and coordinate outside repairs, seeking approval as necessary.

• Contribute to an environment of teamwork and respect.

• Foster a culture of equity and inclusion by recognizing the diverse needs and perspectives of groups and individuals.

• Participate in and help provide cross-training in processes as directed by management to ensure a well-rounded team for coverage purposes. Remain current with relevant technological advancements as it relates to field.

• Maintain regular, reliable, and punctual attendance.

• Perform other duties as assigned.

• May be assigned to support critical city priorities during disasters or other emergencies.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS:

• Two years vocational automotive technical training.
• Two years' experience in the maintenance, repair and overhaul of heavy and light gasoline, diesel and battery-powered equipment and electrical systems.
• Or 4 years of relevant education and experience.
• Valid Driver's license. Successful passing of a required driving record check.
• Valid Class A Commercial Drivers License.
• Positions that require a CDL Class A are safety sensitive positions. Employment is contingent upon successful drug and alcohol screening and subject to random testing.
• Successful passing of a required background check and national fingerprint-based records check.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

• May drive to offsite locations to perform essential functions.
• Move throughout City facilities and buildings.
• Operate a computer and other office equipment.
• Communicate with City employees and residents.
• Lift or move items weighing up to 50 pounds regularly and up to 100 pounds occasionally.
• Lift heavy objects in awkward and confined spaces, using proper lifting and rigging techniques.
• Bending, stretching, and standing for extended periods.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

• Work is performed in a mechanical shop environment and occasionally outdoors in all weather conditions.
• Exposure to hazardous materials and noise from equipment.
• Noise level in the shop or out in the field is moderately loud.
• Work evening and/or weekend hours as needed.

Recruitment Process:

The screening process will include a review of minimum qualifications and applicants selected for an interview will be invited via email to self-schedule a time through the Government Jobs account. At minimum, this position will be subject to a standard criminal background check and professional reference check. This position requires driving and is also subject to a driving record check from the WA State Dept of Licensing (or other state equivalent). Driving records will be evaluated based on a points system depending on the infraction and severity. This position is considered safety-sensitive as defined by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and a pre-employment drug and alcohol test is required. A search of previous drug and alcohol testing records will also be conducted through FMCSA. Positions that require maintaining a CDL are also subject to random drug and alcohol testing.

Medical/Dental/Vision Insurance

• Employees are offered a choice of medical/vision coverage through either Kaiser Permanente or the Citys self-insured plan. Preferred Provider Option is available through the self-insured plan. • The dental insurance plan covers services such as regular checkups, x-rays, fillings and crowns. Orthodontia coverage is also provided.

Deferred Compensation Program

• The City contributes 3% of the employees base wage rate into a deferred compensation retirement plan.
• Employees may also set aside a percentage of their earnings on a tax-deferred basis.

Retirement Plan

• Employees are enrolled in either the State of Washington Department of Retirement Systems Plan (PERS) or the Public Safety Employees Retirement System (PSERS).

• If an employee was in PERS prior to 2006, the employee had the choice to remain in the PERS plan.

• Both the employee and employer contribute to the plan.

VEBA

The City contributes 1% of base pay into individual employee VEBA accounts, which can be used to pay out of pocket medical expenses.

Life Insurance

• A group term life insurance policy is provided to each employee at a value equivalent to the annual salary, up to $50,000.
• Each eligible dependent is also provided with a $1,000 policy. There is no cost to the employee.
• Optional supplemental insurance is available for employees and their dependents at group rates.

Long Term Disability Protection

• Many employees are provided with a long term disability policy up to the equivalent of 60% of their salary.

Flexible Benefits

• The City offers employees the opportunity to open two separate tax-free accounts through salary reduction. One account is to pay for expenses not covered by health insurance and the other account is for child care costs.

Vacation

• Employees accrue vacation beginning with the first day of employment as follows: 12 days per year (0-5 years); 18 days per year (6-10 years); 21 days per year (11-15 years); 24 days per year (16-20 years); and 27 days per year (21+ years).
• Employees may access their vacation immediately.

Sick Leave

• Upon employment, the employee receives a sick leave bank of 24 hours, with an additional 24 hours awarded after three months.
• Thereafter, sick leave accrues at the rate of four hours each pay period.

Employee Assistance Program

• A confidential counseling assessment and referral service is available without cost to employees and family members for help with personal, family or job-related problems.

Paydays

• The City of Renton pays employees on the tenth and the twenty-fifth of each month (24 pay periods each year).

Holidays

• The City recognizes eleven holidays and offers two "personal" holidays each calendar year for most employees, unless otherwise specified in a labor contract.

• Flexible work schedules are available in many departments.
