Description

Vehicle Test Laboratory Technician

Location: Livonia, MI

Schedule: 10:00 pm – 6:30 am

Compensation: $22–$24 per hour

Employment Type: Long term contract to hire

A day in this role

When you arrive for the night shift, you’ll review the test plan with an Engineer and set the lab up for a new round of research, development, or certification testing. You’ll mount the test unit on the stand, route fluid and electrical connections, and outfit it with the right instrumentation. Once the control software and data acquisition systems are configured, you’ll run procedures at experimental conditions and capture clean, reliable data.

Through the night, you’ll watch trends, troubleshoot anomalies, and keep the cell running smoothly—swapping parts, performing routine maintenance, and documenting every test, maintenance action, and component change. Before wrap-up, you’ll help verify calibration status so the lab maintains accuracy and ISO compliance.

What you’ll work with

  • Data capture tools: control software, instrumentation, and data acquisition systems
  • Test equipment: dynamometers, cylinder combustion analyzers, exhaust emissions analyzers, flow meters, force actuators and load cells, environmental chambers, and various material property measurement equipment

Core responsibilities

  • Execute test procedures and gather high-quality data using specialized lab equipment
  • Install test articles on stands, including fixtures, sensors/instrumentation, and all fluid/electrical hookups
  • Perform routine upkeep, replace parts, and request shop supplies as needed
  • Diagnose issues with the unit under test, control software, instrumentation, data systems, or facility equipment
  • Maintain precise records of units on test, tests conducted, maintenance performed, and parts replaced
  • Collaborate directly with Engineers to run at specified experimental conditions
  • Support calibration and preventive maintenance to uphold measurement accuracy and ISO requirements

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • At least 1 year of experience in any of the following: mechanical, instrumentation, electrical, or fabrication
  • Valid driver’s license
