Job Description

This role is responsible for the welfare and care of animals, with a primary focus on large animals in a non-clinical research environment. The veterinarian performs comprehensive veterinary examinations, administers medical care and treatments, and participates in client studies in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and both GLP and non-GLP guidelines. The position also contributes to protocol-driven research activities, ensures regulatory compliance, and supports the overall health and well-being of animals under care.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of applicable Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and GLP regulations to ensure all veterinary and research activities comply with relevant guidelines.
  • Perform veterinary examinations and direct medical treatments as part of standard care, study-specific requirements, and veterinary orders for primarily large animals.
  • Conduct and document a variety of clinical assessments, including physical, gait, and neurological examinations, routine veterinary observations, and charting of physiological data and animal health status.
  • Monitor animals during anesthetic recovery and provide post-operative care in the days following surgery to ensure appropriate healing and timely intervention if complications arise.
  • Share in after-hours, weekend, and on-call duties as part of a rotating schedule once in a permanent role, ensuring continuity of care for animals at all times.
  • Assist in the training of laboratory and technical staff on proper animal care, handling, and research procedures, promoting best practices and adherence to protocols.
  • Serve as a principal investigator as required by client protocols, including writing and contributing to reports and documentation associated with studies.
  • Assist in surgical and interventional procedures, including preparation, intraoperative support, and post-procedure follow-up, as needed.
  • Participate in necropsies as needed, contributing to data collection, documentation, and interpretation of findings.
  • Serve as a backup veterinarian on the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), helping to ensure compliance with USDA and AAALAC standards and supporting the ethical use of animals in research.
  • Support additional veterinary and research-related duties as assigned to meet operational and study needs.

Essential Skills

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from an accredited school of veterinary medicine or equivalent.
  • Bachelor's degree in biological sciences or a related field.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform comprehensive veterinary examinations, including physical, gait, and neurological assessments.
  • Proficiency in directing and administering medical treatments for animals, particularly large animals.
  • Ability to monitor anesthetic recovery and provide effective post-operative care.
  • Strong documentation skills, including accurate charting of physiological data and animal health status.
  • Working knowledge of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) regulations, with the ability to apply them in a non-clinical research environment.
  • Capability to serve as a principal investigator, including writing reports in accordance with client protocols.
  • Ability to assist in surgical and interventional procedures and perform or support necropsies.
  • Familiarity with IACUC responsibilities and compliance with USDA and AAALAC standards.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills for working with laboratory and technical staff.
  • Flexibility to participate in after-hours, weekend, and on-call coverage once in a permanent role.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Research experience with a broad knowledge of animal models is preferred.
  • Experience working in a GLP environment is a plus.
  • Experience with large animal care in a research or similar setting is highly beneficial.
  • Ability to train and mentor laboratory and technical staff in animal care and research procedures.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in documentation and regulatory compliance.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted in place of the specific education and experience listed.
  • Eligibility to receive a monthly stipend for a phone bill as part of the overall compensation package.

Work Environment

The veterinarian joins a small, collaborative team of approximately three professionals in a non-clinical research setting focused primarily on large animals. The role is onsite with flexible working hours, typically within the 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. range, allowing some variation in start and end times based on operational needs. While on contract, there are no on-call shifts required; however, upon transition to a permanent position, the veterinarian participates in a rotating on-call schedule, being on-call for one full week at a time, including weekends, and typically receiving 1-2 calls per week while on-call.
