Overview:

A practice with roots. A team that actually mentors. A place you might not expect to love.

Founded in 1990 by Dr. Paul Yatso — a Minnesota-trained vet who came back to his hometown and built this practice from the ground up — CareVet of Oconto Falls has been part of this community for over 35 years. That legacy matters. It means an established client base, a team that knows what it's doing, and a practice culture that didn't get assembled by a corporate playbook.

If you're a new grad looking for real mentorship, or an experienced vet ready for a lower-noise environment where you can actually practice well — this is worth a serious look.

The Location

Oconto Falls sits along the Oconto River in northeastern Wisconsin — small-town in the best sense, with fishing, kayaking, hiking, and a community that still knows its neighbors. Green Bay is a short drive away when you want a city. Most days, you probably won't need it.

If you've ever thought about trading the sprawl for somewhere quieter without giving up a career you're proud of, this is the kind of place people mean when they say that.

The Practice

Originally founded as Hometown Veterinary Clinic — a mobile bovine and companion animal practice — and operating out of a purpose-built facility since 2005, this is a practice with real history and a loyal client base built over decades. You're not walking into a startup. You're joining something established, with the backing of CareVet's clinical and operational infrastructure behind it.

The Package

  • Base salary $100,000–$130,000 + production with no negative accrual
  • Signing bonus + relocation stipend + student loan support
  • No upfront non-compete
  • Custom comp packages tailored to what you actually need
  • Full benefits — medical, dental, vision, 401(k) with match, short-term disability, life insurance
  • Paid parental leave + adoption assistance
  • Paid time off + free access to Carebnb, CareVet's vacation properties
  • Mentorship, CE coverage, and skill development — especially meaningful here given the practice's commitment to new grad growth
  • On-staff licensed social worker through the EAP — real support, not just a 1-800 number

Responsibilities:

What Your Days Look Like

  • Diagnose and treat patients across the full scope of general practice, with in-house diagnostics and imaging at your disposal
  • Perform surgery with the confidence that comes from working alongside experienced veterinarians who are invested in your development
  • Manage cases from first exam through recovery, supported by a team that's been doing this together for years
  • Build genuine client relationships — explaining conditions clearly, guiding treatment decisions, and earning the trust of a loyal, long-term client base
  • Collaborate closely with fellow veterinarians on complex cases — this is a practice where you can ask questions without it being a weakness
  • Prescribe, treat, and vaccinate across a varied caseload that will challenge you and grow your skills
Qualifications:

What We're Looking For

  • DVM, VMD, or equivalent degree, with active licensure in Wisconsin (or eligibility to obtain)
  • Comfortable working across general practice — diagnostics, medical management, and surgery — with the confidence to make sound clinical decisions independently
  • A communicator clients trust — you can explain a diagnosis clearly, have a hard conversation when needed, and leave an owner feeling heard
  • Genuinely collaborative — you enjoy practicing alongside other veterinarians and value a team that pushes each other to be better
  • Calm under pressure, decisive when it counts, and honest about what you don't know
  • A real fondness for the work — the medicine, the animals, and the people who love them
