At PawMed, you will focus on high-quality small animal urgent care, specializing in those time-sensitive cases that don't require 24/7 ER hospitalization but demand immediate attention. You will be practicing comprehensive medicine alongside an experienced team of veterinarians, some of whom transitioned from demanding emergency room environments to create this essential service. While our focus is urgent care, we prioritize education and advanced capabilities. Job Description

Veterinary Assistant - Part-Time

PawMed | Charleston

PawMed is seeking an experienced Veterinary Assistant to join our growing urgent care team! If you thrive in a fast-paced environment, enjoy emergency and urgent care medicine, and are confident prioritizing patients based on medical urgency, we'd love to meet you.

As our services continue to expand with the addition of a new surgeon, you'll have the opportunity to grow your skills while working alongside a collaborative team dedicated to exceptional patient care.

Schedule

  • Part-Time
  • Schedule posted 1-2 months in advance

What You'll Do

  • Triage patients and identify urgent medical needs
  • Place IV catheters and perform venipuncture
  • Administer medications
  • Monitor hospitalized patients
  • Safely restrain dogs and cats during examinations and treatments
  • Assist doctors with diagnostics, treatments, and procedures
  • Support daily operations at both our Charleston and Summerville locations
  • Work alongside our growing surgical and urgent care teams

What We're Looking For

  • 1-2 years of Veterinary Assistant experience
  • Previous urgent care experience required
  • Proficient with IV catheter placement
  • Confident performing blood draws
  • Experience monitoring hospitalized patients
  • Strong patient assessment and triage skills
  • Excellent communication and teamwork
  • Ability to remain calm and organized in a fast-paced environment

Typical Caseload

  • Weekdays: 15-20 patients per day
  • Weekends: Frequently more than 20 patients per day

Cases You'll Help Treat

  • Vomiting and diarrhea
  • Fever and dehydration
  • Ear and eye infections
  • Skin conditions, allergies, fleas, and ticks
  • Cuts, lacerations, burns, broken nails, and paw injuries
  • Limping and fractures
  • Difficulty urinating
  • Decreased appetite
  • Toxicity cases (rat poison, pesticides, and other toxins)
  • Euthanasia support and client care

Your Impact as an Urgent Care Veterinary Assistant

  • Be a Critical Support in Urgent Situations: You'll be an essential part of the medical team, directly assisting veterinarians and technicians with hands-on patient care in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ensure a Seamless Workflow During a Crisis: Your ability to anticipate needs and maintain composure will be key to keeping the clinic running efficiently, even during a medical emergency.

What You'll Bring to the Team

  • At least 1 year of veterinary experience, with ER or high-volume experience preferred.
  • The ability to stay calm, composed, and efficient during a medical crisis.
  • Confidence and skill in handling pets, with proficiency in basic laboratory, pharmacy, and nursing skills.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced team environment.
  • A flexible schedule, with availability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
