Position Summary
Small Animal Surgery – Veterinary Nurse II: Inventory & Equipment Coordinator
- Complete all duties assigned or associated with, but not limited to, a Small Animal Surgery Veterinary Nurse I and II.
- Serve as the primary point person for surgery inventory management, equipment maintenance coordination, and supply procurement.
- Monitor inventory levels of consumable supplies, implants, instruments, and specialty equipment utilized by the Small Animal Surgery service.
- Maintain established inventory levels and facilitate timely ordering of supplies to prevent disruptions to patient care and workflow.
- Work collaboratively with faculty, residents, veterinary nurses, Central Sterilization, and vendors to identify supply needs and resolve inventory concerns.
- Research products, obtain pricing information, and provide recommendations regarding supplies, equipment, and inventory standardization.
- Coordinate supply orders in accordance with hospital purchasing procedures and budgetary guidelines.
- Monitor backorders, discontinued items, and supply shortages and communicate potential impacts to the surgery team.
- Maintain organized storage areas and inventory locations to promote efficiency, accessibility, and regulatory compliance.
- Conduct routine inventory audits and assist in identifying opportunities to improve inventory control and reduce waste.
- Serve as the primary coordinator for specialty surgical equipment maintenance and repairs.
- Maintain service records and preventative maintenance schedules for specialty surgical equipment.
- Coordinate equipment repairs, warranty claims, and vendor service visits.
- Work collaboratively with faculty and staff to evaluate new equipment needs and assist with implementation of new equipment and technologies.
- Assist with troubleshooting equipment concerns and facilitate communication with vendors, Biomedical Engineering, Facilities, or other support departments as appropriate.
- Develop and maintain equipment reference materials, inventories, and standard operating procedures related to equipment use and management.
- Provide updates to the supervisor regarding supply utilization trends, equipment concerns, and anticipated operational needs.
- Promote organization, accountability, and consistency in inventory and equipment management practices throughout the service.
Minimum Requirements
Knowledge normally acquired in the first two or three years in college, technical or vocational school with coursework in Veterinary Technology; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in patient care, surgery, drug dosing and sterilization, or an equivalent combination of education and experience; licensed as a Veterinary Technician with the State of Michigan, or attainment of such certification within one year of date of employment.
Desired Qualifications
Experience as a veterinary technician within an educational setting.
Ability to maintain and document records in electronic format.
Exceptional communication and organizational skills.

Summary of Physical Demands
Will be required to lift medical equipment and animals into cages; carry animals between cages and exam tables/gurneys; push carts containing animals and
equipment to other areas of the hospital; climb stairs carrying lab samples; restrain animals. Lifting up to 50lbs individually and up to 150lbs as a team.
Summary of Health Risks
Working with animals or unfixed tissue. May wear respirator. Possible exposure to zoonotic diseases.
