For 30 years, Portland Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Care (PVESC) has been a trusted resource for pets, families, and referring veterinarians throughout Southern Maine. We provide 24/7 emergency care alongside advanced specialty medicine—and we're continuing to grow.

We're looking for an experienced Practice Manager to lead the day-to-day operations of our Warren Avenue hospital in Portland, Maine and help shape the next chapter of PVESC. This is an opportunity for a strong people leader who enjoys building high-performing teams, improving systems, and creating an environment where veterinary professionals can do their best work.

You'll partner closely with our Medical Director, Operations Director, and Human Resource Director to support our new Urgent Care and certain Specialty teams, strengthen hospital operations, and ensure an exceptional experience for patients, clients, and team members.

What you'll do

  • Lead daily hospital operations, including staffing, scheduling, workflows, and team coordination
  • Recruit, onboard, coach, and develop veterinary technicians, client service representatives, and support staff
  • Build a positive, accountable culture where people feel supported, valued, and empowered to grow
  • Partner with hospital leadership on budgets, financial performance, KPIs, and operational goals
  • Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, workflows, and the overall hospital experience
  • Maintain high standards for patient care, client service, safety, and regulatory compliance
  • Navigate client concerns with professionalism, empathy, and sound judgment

What we're looking for

  • 2+ years of leadership or management experience in veterinary medicine
  • 5+ years of experience as a licensed/certified veterinary technician
  • Experience in emergency, urgent care, or specialty medicine strongly preferred
  • A proven ability to coach, motivate, and develop teams in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong communication, relationship-building, and problem-solving skills
  • Experience managing budgets, operational metrics, and financial performance
  • A collaborative leadership style and the ability to lead effectively through change

Schedule:

During the initial growth phase, the Practice Manager will spend time across daytime, evening, and weekend shifts to understand the needs of each team and position, build strong relationships with staff, and help shape workflows as the new urgent care service expands.

As the service grows, the schedule will evolve to meet the needs of the hospital and team. This is an opportunity to be closely involved from the beginning and help build a strong operational foundation for the future.
