Job Description
A veterinary technician externship at an NVA hospital offers veterinary technician students a unique opportunity to observe the day-to-day operations of a veterinary practice while gaining valuable hands-on technical experience. Although every NVA hospital is unique, we all share a commitment to a supportive environment, high-quality medicine, and exceptional service for animals and the people who love them.
Flying Cloud Animal Hospital underwent a major renovation and relocation in 2024, enhancing our ability to deliver exceptional patient care and client service. Our facility features two dedicated double surgery suites, including a dental procedure suite and a soft tissue surgery suite. Externs will have the opportunity to learn alongside a collaborative team of six veterinarians who are committed to mentorship, high-quality patient care, and a client-centric approach to patient care.
Vet tech externs will work closely with veterinarians and credentialed veterinary technicians to develop and refine their technical skills. Responsibilities may include assisting with patient restraint, collecting patient histories, supporting physical exams, performing laboratory procedures, assisting with diagnostic imaging, anesthesia monitoring, dentistry procedures, and observing or assisting with surgical cases. Externs will also gain experience in patient care, treatment administration, and hospital workflow.
In addition to building clinical and technical skills, veterinary technician externs will have the opportunity to strengthen their communication skills while working with the medical team, support staff, and clients.
Most externship experiences range from two to eight weeks depending on student and hospital schedules. Externships at Flying Cloud Animal Hospital are designed for 3rd and 4th year students.
Veterinary students who are in the clinical portion of their education are eligible for a travel/living expense stipend. Click HERE to view list of stipend amounts and HERE for details on the stipend program. The stipend amount for Flying Cloud Animal Hospital is $500.
