Lead Veterinary Technician (General Practice)

Thrive Pet Healthcare – South Lamar

Austin, TX

 

Schedule: Full-time (4x10s) with a minimum of 2 Saturdays per month

Compensation is negotiable based on experience and credentials, with an expected starting range of $22 – $25 / hour. The actual rate will carefully consider a wide range of factors including your skills, qualifications, experience, and location.

About You

As a Lead Veterinary Technician, you’ll combine hands-on patient care with team leadership in a fast-paced general practice. You’ll support our doctors and clients by delivering high-quality nursing care in exam rooms and surgery, including anesthesia monitoring, guiding the day-to-day patient flow, and helping train and elevate the team.

Your Experience & Skills 

Required

  • 3+ years of veterinary technician experience providing direct patient care in a general practice or similar setting
  • 1+ year of leadership/lead tech experience (training, coaching, mentoring, or shift leadership)
  • Strong communication, conflict resolution, and a positive, solutions-focused mindset
  • Team-oriented and willing to cross-train across all areas of a general practice
  • Reliable and self-driven with accountability for learning and growth
  • Weekend availability (minimum 2 Saturdays per month)

Preferred

  • Credentialed technician (CVT/LVT/RVT)

 

Role Responsibilities (including but not limited to): 

 

  • Maintain a positive work environment that supports teamwork, accountability, and professional growth
  • Manage and oversee the Technician team
  • Onboard, train, and mentor technicians and new hires on hospital procedures, protocols, and patient care standards (including anesthetic monitoring)
  • Provide hands-on patient care while leading the team, including supporting exam room/appointment flow and assisting in surgery
  • Follow and enforce Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
  • Create and manage technician work schedules
  • Partner with Practice Manager and Medical Director on team meeting agendas and training
  • Attend leadership, operational, and team meetings
  • Conduct DEA auditing and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements
  • Troubleshoot equipment and repair-related issues as needed
  • Partner with Practice Manager on inventory management and ordering processes
  • Partner with Practice Manager on conducting technician evaluations and provide performance feedback
  • Partner with the Practice Manager on business objectives
