Under general supervision, the Veterinary Technician is responsible for observing, reporting, and monitoring the health and comfort of animals. The position requires providing humane, safe, and sanitary care for laboratory animals using appropriate equipment and established procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Provide humane, safe, and sanitary care for laboratory animals.
  • Observe animals for clinical signs of diseases and behavioral changes, reporting observations to the Animal Care Manager.
  • Perform routine laboratory tests and assist in preparing animals for invasive procedures.
  • Provide animal restraint for examination and anesthesia induction.
  • Communicate any animal health issues with the Animal Care Manager or DVM.
  • Maintain accurate records to ensure compliance with applicable regulations, including animal treatments and drug logs.
  • Clean, maintain, and sterilize instruments and equipment, and assist in maintaining assigned lab areas.
  • Coordinate inventory with other staff members.
  • Induce and maintain anesthesia, monitor physiologic status, and take appropriate action for animals on studies.
  • Attend in-house training programs to advance knowledge of laboratory animal science and workplace safety.
  • Provide support to investigators when needed and ensure that all regulations are followed.
  • Prepare and submit lab work to outside diagnostic laboratories.
  • Administer oral medications, SQ, IM, and IV injections, and place intravenous catheters.
  • Set up and maintain equipment, including blood pressure monitors and IV fluid pumps.
  • Understand aseptic principles and accurately calculate medication dosages.
  • Administer peri-operative pain medications to surgical animals.
  • Maintain surgery and treatment inventory, checking for outdated supplies and drugs.
  • Remain productive during slow times by seeking additional duties such as cleaning and stocking.
  • Participate in the entire scope of veterinary care and husbandry, including animal procurement and sanitization.
  • Prepare and anesthetize animals for procedures, provide peri-operative monitoring, and recover them from anesthesia.
  • Dispense medications to study animals and perform minor surgical interventions.
  • Assess the health status of animals for recording purposes and assist in diagnostic and therapeutic decisions.
  • Perform blood and other analytical tests necessary to assess animal health.
  • Report equipment issues to supervisors and document circumstances affecting study quality.

Essential Skills

  • AS degree in Veterinary Technology or a related field required.
  • 1+ years of animal experience preferred.
  • Experience with laboratory animals is a plus.
  • Ability to perform heavy repetitive lifting and moving of animals and equipment.
  • Strong focus on flexibility, multitasking, attention to detail, and organizational skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to analyze complex information and solve problems related to laboratory animal care.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • BS/BA degree in life sciences preferred.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team setting.
  • Good judgment, patience, and professionalism in interacting with staff and management.

Work Environment

The Veterinary Technician will work in an indoor, climate-controlled Vivarium.

Shifts start between 6:30 am and 11:00 am, generally lasting 8 hours, with overtime or extended days based on procedural schedules.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $49000.00 - $53000.00/yr.
