Position Summary

The Veterinary Technology Instructor Clinical Supervisor will be responsible for utilizing clinical experience and educational knowledge to provide oversight and coordination of veterinary technology students off site with our clinical partner veterinary clinics, research facilities, teaching hospitals and farms. They will also provide primary instruction of students in classroom, laboratory, and clinical settings. This individual must demonstrate effective teaching practices and a multi-modal approach to learning by utilizing relevant and current methodologies. They will be expected to deliver prompt and consistent evaluation of student progress and maintenance of accurate student records. Applicants must have strong interpersonal and conflict management skills.

Salary: Commensurate with education and experience according to the Alabama Community College System Salary Schedule D1 (Salary range: $46,590 - $94,363) for nine-month employment; Summer employment may be available dependent on enrollment ($14,384 - $29,184).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists in the development and modification of curriculum content as needed to include instruction materials reflective of modern veterinary medical practice
  • Participates in the planning process to assist the College in effectively fulfilling its mission and goals to include recruitment and retention efforts
  • Has knowledge of current, relevant, and evolving veterinary practice and procedures involving animal care and management, such as: pharmacy, pain management, restraint, equipment, instrumentation and therapeutic modalities used in veterinary medicine
  • Actively supports efforts to achieve and maintain full accreditation with the AVMA CVTEA
  • Performs the duties of the LVT effectively and safely while supervising or instructing students in laboratory and off-site clinical instruction facilities utilizing veterinary team-based approach; maintains a safe learning environment for students, patients, and instructors
  • Assists other Veterinary Technology faculty with demonstrations and observes student performance as needed
  • Monitors student competencies and maintains documentation of student completion of required essential skills in the program's electronic software systems
  • Assists in promoting effective and positive business relations with veterinarians, veterinary licensing boards, veterinary and veterinary technician associations, animal shelters, equipment and industry suppliers, and local merchants
  • Prepares laboratory environments for instruction by assembling necessary resources
  • Operates and maintains clinical laboratory and teaching equipment
  • Monitors and coordinates for an adequate stock of needed inventory and supplies
  • Performs regular audits of classroom and laboratory inventory and recommends purchase of major and minor resources
  • Abides by policies, standards, protocols, goals, and objectives of Southern Union State Community College Veterinary Technology Program
  • Ensures compliance with the approved standards for the curriculum
  • Assists with continuous program review and development processes that assure program effectiveness by participating in assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation activities to improve the instructional quality of the program [includes committee work, course and curriculum planning, and department meetings]
  • Ensures quality control, compliance and other legal requirements. Maintains appropriate documents, records, and files in accordance with College policies and procedures, accrediting agencies and regulating boards
  • Leads efforts to increase student success in Veterinary Technology; provides individual or group tutoring to students outside the classroom as needed through regularly scheduled office hours or appointments.
  • Maintains professional certification (LVT) in Alabama and actively seeks out opportunities for professional and personal advancement and development to maintain relevance in the veterinary profession
  • Maintains open and timely communication with the Program Director and other program faculty on all issues and matters related to the program
  • Ability to work flexibly with schedule changes and adapt to unanticipated circumstances that may arise daily in clinical settings
  • Performs other duties as requested by the Program Director

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be a graduate of an AVMA accredited program of Veterinary Technology or Veterinary Nursing with active licensure in good standing with the Alabama State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners as a veterinary technician. If applicant does not have licensure in Alabama, applicant must be eligible and will be required to obtain licensure in the State of Alabama within 90 days of hire

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • One year of supervisory, managerial, or mentorship experience in veterinary medicine related position related to supervision of veterinary students
  • Experience teaching in a college setting
  • Experience working in a specialty hospital or academic veterinary setting
  • Experience in a variety of teaching and evaluation methods and delivery modalities including multimedia presentation of classroom lectures and laboratory activities
  • Minimum of five years of clinical experience as a veterinary technician working in companion animal and/or mixed animal veterinary medicine preferred
  • Experience in program accreditation and/or outcome assessment and/or evaluation
  • Veterinary Technician Specialty (VTS)

The TRS was established in 1939 to provide benefits to qualified persons employed by state-supported educational institutions.
