POSITION SUMMARY

The Director of Nursing develops and maintains nursing service goals, objectives, and standards of nursing practice, adheres to staffing plans, and develops Nursing Department policies and procedures. The Director of Nursing is responsible for organizing, developing, and directing nursing services and ensuring the deliverance of quality nursing care. The Director of Nursing is actively involved in department activities, transdisciplinary team activities, and hospital activities to ensure individualized, patient-centered health care for all patient populations admitted to Specialty Hospital.

Patient Population:

 

Has contact with patients in a clinical setting, understands and demonstrates appropriate behavior when interacting with patients in the adult (18-65 years of age) and geriatric (65 and older) populations.

SUPERVISION

Directs the activities and personnel of the Nursing Department.

EXPERIENCE

Five (5) to seven (7) years of nursing experience in an acute clinical environment including clinical management experience. Three (3) years of critical care or comparable experience is preferred.  Two years of management experience.

EDUCATION

Bachelor’s degree, or combination of an Associate’s degree in an approved Registered Nurse program and meaningful and appropriate experience.

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATIONS

Current RN licensure in the state where currently practicing, Current BLS and ACLS is required. The Director of Nursing must maintain a current Registered Nurse licensure, BLS and ACLS certifications while employed with the hospital.

1.        Holds around the clock 100% accountability for management of clinical nursing practice and patient care on a daily basis including safe patient care, staff attendance, and all functions regarding patient care.

 

 

 

2.       Implements changes necessary for the clinical departments involved to maintain and improve quality patient care.

 

 

 

3.       Ensure that each nurse on staff is properly licensed and abides by the standards for care established by the organization and state and federal laws.

 

 

 

4.        Assumes accountability for remaining current on standards of care as established by CMS, state standards and any licensing body involved in surveying the hospital.  Promotes compliance of standards on a daily basis.

 

 

 

5.        Participates in all admission decisions ensuring that the patient’s clinical needs can be met at the hospital.

 

 

 

6.        Ensures that daily patient assignments are commensurate with the level of education, training, and demonstrated competencies of personnel.

 

 

 

7.        Ensures nursing personnel use the nursing process in managing patient care and ensures continuity from admission through discharge.

 

 

 

8.        Participates in daily and weekly interdisciplinary team meetings to discuss patient status, census changes, pending admissions, discharges, etc.

 

 

 

9.        Communicates and interprets policies and procedures to nursing staff an monitors staff practices and implementation.

 

 

 

10.   Performs rounds to observe care and to interview staff, patients, families, and physicians.

 

 

 

11.   Monitors staff for compliance with OSHA mandates and facility policies on workplace safety.

 

 

 

12.    Monitors the nursing budgeted FTE level and makes changes according to the acuity of the patients and the needs of the hospital on a daily basis.

 

 

 

13.    Is accountable for the management of nursing personnel functions, seeks to recruit and retain an appropriate mix of qualified, competent, nursing personnel as needed.

 

 

 

14.   Develops a plan for the nursing department that focuses on the provision of high – quality, cost effective care for the patient that is consistent with the hospital’s strategic plan.

 

 

 

15.   Establishes, implements, and monitors the infection control program which is designed to prevent the development and transmission or disease and infection.

 

 

 

16.   Prepares and reviews infection control surveillance reports to identify trends and to develop effective actions to control and prevent infections.

 

 

 

17.   Provides written quarterly reports to the medical staff in regard to infection prevention and control process and quality issues.

 

 

 

18.   Reports mandatory quality and infection control data to the appropriate regulatory body within the required timeframes.

 

 

 

19.   Monitors, tracks, and trends performance indicators as applicable.  Collects data and makes recommendations based on results.

 

 

 

20.   Supervises and directs all activities of the Resource Management Department.

 

 

 

21.   Quality:  Coordinates data collection and analysis, prepares reports, tracks the status of the following data:  Blood use, Medication use/errors; Risk management, patient safety, infection control, safety, satisfaction surveys; restraints, mortality review, procedure review.

 

 

 

22.   Reports mandatory quality and infection control data to the appropriate regulatory body within the required time frames (Care Data sets, NHSN)

 

 

 

23.   Ensures monthly environmental monitoring of departmental patient safety compliance data.

 

 

 

24.   Serves as internal consultant to the executive council, clinical departments, other services, and performance improvement teams, on patient safety initiatives.

 

 

 

25.   Develops responses to sentinel events.

 

 

 

26.   Educates staff, employees, and patients/families on safety initiatives.

 

 

 

27.   Coordinates the regulatory survey process.

 

 

 

28.   Serves as Chair of the Safety Committee and provides safety reports to performance improvement, Medical Executive Committee and Governing Board.

 

 

 

29.   Performs all other duties as assigned.
