Position Summary

Serves as Homewood Living Ministries’ Chief Financial Officer and provides strategic financial leadership to support the organization’s mission, long-term sustainability, growth, and development. As a member of the executive leadership team, the Chief Financial Officer advises the President/Chief Executive Officer regarding financial strategy, project development, capital allocation, financing, risk, organizational performance, and major business decisions. The Chief Financial Officer leads financial planning and analysis, long-range projections, project feasibility, capital markets activities, treasury, accounting, investments, budgeting, reporting, reimbursement, internal controls, and regulatory compliance. The position develops and maintains sophisticated financial models to evaluate operations, expansions, repositioning initiatives, acquisitions, affiliations, and other strategic opportunities. The Chief Financial Officer also directs the Finance Department and ensures the accuracy, timeliness, integrity, and usefulness of Homewood’s financial information.

Key Responsibilities

• Protects the confidentiality of information concerning residents, families, coworkers, business operations, financial matters, and other sensitive or proprietary information.
• Supports Homewood’s Christian mission, core values, policies, and standards and provides financial leadership consistent with the organization’s identity and commitment to faithful service.
• Serves as a strategic advisor to the President/Chief Executive Officer, executive leadership team, and Boards of Directors regarding financial performance, growth opportunities, capital allocation, organizational risk, and long-term sustainability.
• Provides financial leadership for major development, expansion, renovation, replacement, and repositioning projects from initial concept through financing, construction, stabilization, and evaluation of results.
• Partners with project development staff, community leadership, architects, contractors, engineers, legal counsel, financial advisors, market analysts, and other consultants to establish project scope, phasing, cost parameters, schedules, pricing, funding requirements, and financial objectives.
• Develops and maintains comprehensive financial models and projections for proposed projects and strategic initiatives, including development costs, operating assumptions, unit pricing, entrance fees, occupancy, revenue, expenses, cash flow, debt capacity, investment returns, sensitivity analyses, and downside scenarios.
• Directs the evaluation of project feasibility and provides clear recommendations to the President/Chief Executive Officer regarding whether, when, and under what financial parameters projects should proceed.
• Leads the development and execution of financing strategies for capital projects and organizational growth, including tax-exempt and taxable debt, bank financing, public bond offerings, lines of credit, investment resources, philanthropy, joint ventures, and other available sources of capital.
• Manages Homewood’s relationships with banks, investment bankers, underwriters, financial advisors, rating agencies, bond trustees, investors, lenders, and other capital-market participants.
• Leads debt issuance, refinancing, covenant structuring, lender negotiations, rating-agency presentations, investor communications, and other financing activities. Ensures compliance with debt agreements, bond documents, continuing disclosure requirements, and financial covenants.
• Develops multiyear financial plans and consolidated long-range projections that include income statements, balance sheets, cash-flow statements, capital requirements, liquidity, debt capacity, covenant compliance, and key operating assumptions for Homewood and its subsidiaries.
• Leads the annual operating and capital budgeting processes in collaboration with the President/Chief Executive Officer, Chief Operating Officer, community executive directors, department leaders, and Boards of Directors.
• Provides timely financial statements, forecasts, dashboards, variance analyses, cash-flow reports, and other decision-support information. Clearly communicates financial results, emerging trends, risks, and recommended corrective actions.
• Establishes meaningful financial and operational performance measures for the organization and its communities. Monitors performance against budgets, forecasts, prior periods, strategic objectives, industry benchmarks, and debt requirements.
• Directs all accounting and financial reporting functions, including general accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, resident funds, investments, fixed assets, consolidations, audits, tax filings, and financial statements.
• Ensures that financial statements and records are accurate, complete, timely, and prepared in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles, applicable healthcare reimbursement principles, regulatory requirements, and organizational policies.
• Oversees Medicare, Medicaid, and other third-party reimbursement matters, including required cost reports, payment methodologies, reimbursement strategies, and compliance with applicable requirements.
• Serves as the primary liaison with independent auditors and ensures the timely completion of annual audits, tax filings, cost reports, and other required financial or regulatory submissions.
• Provides leadership for treasury management, including cash management, banking relationships, liquidity planning, short- and long-term cash requirements, debt-service obligations, working capital, and the safeguarding of corporate funds.
• Oversees Homewood’s investment portfolios and works with investment advisors and appropriate Board committees to monitor asset allocation, investment performance, liquidity, risk, and compliance with investment policies.
• Develops and maintains an effective system of internal controls, financial policies, approval authorities, and risk-management practices designed to protect organizational assets and ensure the integrity of financial operations.
• Collaborates with leadership to evaluate acquisitions, affiliations, partnerships, service-line expansion, new business opportunities, and the financial implications of significant contracts and strategic decisions.
• Recruits, develops, leads, and evaluates a high-performing Finance Department. Establishes clear responsibilities, accountability, succession plans, professional-development opportunities, and service expectations for the finance team.
• Translates complex financial matters into clear, understandable information for Board members, residents, coworkers, lenders, investors, and other stakeholders.
• Serves as Treasurer of Homewood Living Ministries and performs the responsibilities assigned to that office by the organization’s governing documents.
• Serves as custodian of Homewood’s financial records and fiscal documents and ensures that records are maintained and retained in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, agreements, and organizational policies.
• Performs additional duties as assigned by supervisor.

Qualifications

• Alignment with the organization’s identity statements and core values.
• Master’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or a related field is required.
• Certified Public Accountant designation is strongly preferred.
• A minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible financial leadership experience, including significant experience leading accounting, financial planning, treasury, capital financing, and organizational decision support.
• Senior financial leadership experience within senior living, healthcare, long-term care, Life Plan Communities/Continuing Care Retirement Communities, nonprofit organizations, or a similarly complex, capital-intensive industry is strongly preferred.
• Demonstrated experience with project development, financial feasibility, capital planning, debt financing, bond transactions, banking relationships, rating agencies, investment management, and capital markets.
• Advanced ability to develop, review, and communicate complex financial models, multiyear projections, project pro formas, cash-flow forecasts, sensitivity analyses, and capital-funding strategies.
• Thorough knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles, financial reporting, internal controls, audits, tax-exempt organizations, healthcare reimbursement, and applicable governmental and regulatory requirements.
• Experience working with Boards of Directors, finance and investment committees, executive leadership teams, lenders, auditors, attorneys, financial advisors, and external consultants.
• Demonstrated ability to connect financial analysis with strategy and translate complex information into clear recommendations that support timely and informed decisions.
• Strong executive leadership, communication, negotiation, organizational, analytical, coaching, and team-development skills.

• Proficiency with contemporary financial systems, planning and forecasting tools, data analytics, reporting platforms, and automated accounting systems.

• Ability and willingness to travel among Homewood’s communities and attend Board, lender, investor, project, and other meetings as required.

Physical Requirements

Work is primarily performed in a standard office environment. This role requires frequent use of a computer and other office equipment. This position is largely sedentary but may involve occasional walking and reaching. Must be able to use hands to operate computers and other tools. Visual requirements include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. Minimal lifting may be required.
