CLASSIFICATION TITLE: VICTIMS SERVICES OFFICER SENIOR

PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION

The purpose of this classification is to perform highly responsible administrative work in the development, coordination, and implementation of victim services through victim advocacy in the Victim Services Program for the Solicitor General's Office. Duties include assisting victims of domestic violence, assaults and batteries, DUI, and vehicular homicide cases, theft and sexual assault cases; assisting in the administration of the program by providing victim advocacy, support, and coordination of county, State, and private/community resources. Limited supervision is provided by the Solicitor General, with independent initiative and decision making expected.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Screens all incoming cases to determine if they are covered under the Victim's Rights Act. Locates and initiates contact with the victim; determines appropriate method of contact after a review of the case. Provides victim information concerning all rights available; and advises victims on the invocation of victims' rights. Assist in the administration and coordination of the Victim Services Program. Provides victims with an explanation of he investigative, preparatory, pretrial, trial, sentencing, and appellate phases of cases within the office. Accompany victims to interviews with police and office personnel and to the trial of cases. Communicate with the victim, keeping him or her informed as to the status of the involved case. Creates and maintains a list of contact persons at governmental, community, and private levels, resources available to the victim and makes referrals as necessary. Provide victim information concerning the policies of the office relevant to certain types of cases. Provide victim information and support in completing Victim Impact Statements. Acclimate victims in the criminal justice system, preparing them for each phase of involved cases.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS

May be a member of any forum, task force, support group, protocol, or review committee or entity addressing the issue of victims' rights and support. Performs other related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. This requirement may be waived with a minimum of five (5) years experience in criminal justice processes; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and knowledge of essential functions for this job.

ADA COMPLIANCE

Physical Ability: Tasks require the ability to exert very moderate physical effort in light work, typically involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (12-20 pounds).

Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

Environmental Factors: Essential functions are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
